I added pics to the first post. Will be making up PDA tonight and perhaps a couple more.

And whats the difference inbetween brewer's yeast and nutritional yeast? Does it matter?
Lower nutrient levels certainly make the mycelium run a little more, but IME it is more effective when switching between different types of media (for example, MEA transferred to PDA).
And I don't know. I ended up getting brewers yeast. It says "nutritional yeast" right on the front

I don't know of one aside from CH Hell's additives thread but that is regarding bulk substrate.
Your guess is as good as mine at this point, this is new territory to me too.

I started this because I've only ever used pre-mixed MEA. Once I found out about AM's cookbook I picked up my supplies (that I didn't already have around).

What Is the Difference Between Brewer's Yeast & Nutritional Yeast?
They are similar but not identical. Nutritional yeast is typically in flake form and looks like yellow-orange fish food. Vegans use it as an alternative to cheese and a vegan source of B12. According to the link above brewer's yeast can be found either active or inactive but nutritional yeast is typically inactive.

Actually brewer's yeast is inactive as well, it is the byproduct of the brewing process:
Quote:
Brewer's yeast is a by-product of the brewing industry. After 5-10 succeeding beer fermentations, the yeast, due to increasing contamination, loses its viability and activity and is no longer acceptable for making beer. The yeast then becomes surplus and can be used for the production of food flavors, feed formulations or as nutritional yeast food. Brewer's Yeast is a dried, inactive yeast that has no fermenting power. It is sold for its nutritional qualities as it is very high in at least 10 separate B-vitamin factors.

yeah, I just re-read the page I linked to as well and realized that it said brewer's yeast can be either active or inactive.

AAwwww!! No ground cricket agar yet?! That's the one I been looking forward to!!
For the agars with krill, blood worms, mealworms and other chunky additives are you adding them to the total mix then blending? It looks like you are. You will reduce those chunky items better if you grind them separately then add to the rest and blend once more to mix it all up.

Skip the middleman, use the 'cricket food' at pet stores for gut loading
Wiki: "Several commercial products are available and are fortified specifically for gut loading. These products often include varying combinations of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber."
It's sold as a gel, which may make use easier

I inoculated some PDA dishes with a few cubes and a few gourmets. I'm making up 12 PDYA plates which will also be used in short order.

I'll be getting there. I may take a look for VG's recommended "cricket food" gel. I found some canned crickets but they are wet as hell...and stinky
I'm going to dehydrate those and the canned meal worms I picked up and I'll be doing those ASAP.
And good idea, yesterday I did in fact blend the additives as well

We are back on for the crickets and meal worm agars
PDA plates are colonizing now. I will snap some pics of growth on each media. PDYA plates are poured and awaiting tranfers.
More to come

So, I have been watching my PDA and my PDYA plates (about a dozen of each were poured).
I am not very impressed with the wispy, slow growth I'm seeing on the PDA plates.
However, the PDYA plates are making thick, healthy, fast growth.
I don't have any pictures yet as they are just starting to take off. I'll post another update in a few days

I use a PKA mix, have you tried reducing the amount of potato due to the heavy starch content? I'm going to pick up some dextrose today to try some of the recipes you haven't crossed off. I want to see if I get faster results and less contamination. 3 of my 5 clone transfers had some cobweb and previous iterations had nasty bacteria.

PKA?
Where K = Karo?
My PDYA and PDA plates have the same amount of potato starch added. The only difference is the yeast. And what a difference it looks to be making
If you are having contam issues, changing media won't help that...you need to keep good sterile procedures or your agar will always be going bad no matter the type used.
Sorry you are having trouble. How do you prepare/pour/inoculate your agar?

Ketamine, I like to get my myc fucked up.
Lol yeah it's karo. I've been making progress I'm in my 3rd week and have made improvements, also been documenting where a few have been helping with it. It's no doubt my technique here is the readers digest:
5g potato flakes 9g agar 1tsp karo 500ml water
Mix flakes with water, microwave 6 minutes, stir, add Karo, stir, add agar powder, stir. Put lid on. Pc for 25 minutes. Pour into dish while still hot, while swirling dozens of times. Put top on dish. Everything after I pull out the jar is done in my sab and I take precautions just like my g2g.
Not trying to plug but all the details from my first attempt to this week are here.

Here are the updates this week.
I have added my experiment to the top...grain dunk agar. I have plates poured and will make some transfers tomorrow. I plan to run isolates on each type of media.
Yeast in the potato dextrose agar really gave me some beautiful and rhizomorphic growth. I was very impressed with the results when I transferred from straight MEA.
I also poured malt extract yeast agar.
More pics and updates next week

22) Potato dextrose yeast agar: 10g agar, 10g potato starch, 7g dextrose, 1g yeast

Here are some early glances at the grain-dunk agar and malt-yeast agar (MYA):
Grain dunk agar looks promising:

Here is the same isolate on MYA, looking great:

How do you think mycelium will behave after being transferred from PD(Y)A to grains?
