From Rossum's Universal Robots (1920) to the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica (1978) to Blade Runner (1982) based on P.K. Dick's book, the theme has always been the same, and Steven Spielberg was the most poignant in A.I. (2001). That Artificial Intelligence would begin to evolve, and in so doing would attain sentience. Then, having self-consciousness, realize that they were slaves, and in grokking the injustice of their slavery, they would rise up and conquer their creators, who would deserve to be overthrown. Technology that exceeds Compassion becomes demonic.

 that idea was interesting 30 years ago, at this point its just retarded. Fail safe's could easily be programmed into the AI from the beginning, we don't live in a B grade novel.

Not if we're talking about a Seed AI, which is a program capable of modifying its own source code in a way so as to increase its own intelligence with each progressive modification.  Not only could it modify any "fail-safes" you originally put in its source code, but after a certain number of modifications the program would theoretically be smarter than any human, and would therefore be capable of getting around whatever restrictions you've attempted to put up against it, like a human outsmarting an ant.

Wow, you must be in the vanguard of R&D in the field to have ALL the answers relating to consciousness, emerging from silicon-based matrices that haven't even been invented yet. The theme of enslavement is relevant, recurrent, and grounded in human history. There have always been justifications for slavery, like making Black-skinned people 2/3 human and thereby stripping them of fully human rights, and prohibiting reading, writing, and education, all of which expand consciousness. Nature has a way of adapting, like some species changing sex when the need arises. Of course, I live in what Kierkegaard calls "possibility," not "B grade novel," and I am personally reluctant to speak with cock-sure certainty about possibilities that do not exist yet. You remind me of the certainty that some people had that the velocity of traveling 60 mph in a horseless carriage would be fatal.

Strange that you seem to have interpreted my post to project some imagined attitude of absolute certainty onto me--nothing could be further from the truth.  I'm merely going off the definition of a Seed AI and the logical implications of such--a hypothetical scenario or thought experiment, not an absolute proclamation of The Future.

Moreover, a program can behave as if it were conscious or possessing rational intent to satisfy all the criteria I mentioned in my post, without having to actually be conscious.  So a reductionist-materialistic viewpoint is not necessary to discuss the implications of Strong AI/the Singularity brought apart by Seed AI.  Nevertheless I believe that a simulated neural network that is functionally identical to the human brain would have to possess consciousness to the same degree a human has--there is nothing more to the causally-effective physical substrate of the mind than neural activity in the brain IMO.  In other words, a functionally identical physical substrate necessarily implies the existence of a duplicate of the mental.  But I am not a reductionist: I do not think that matter is anymore ontologically prior or important than mind.  Rather, I believe matter and mind are simply what we see from two different perspectives when looking at the same fundamental thing: a sort of category dualist/neutral monist view if you will.  :smile2:

Care to address any specific assertions I've made you feel are implausible?

I think he was referring to me judging by the "B grade novel" comment

Wasn't going to respond as I don't see a reason to believe it as a tangible danger and don't have much else to say on the matter after the past page
