So, Growing a Veggie Garden After 10+ years... Advice?
    #18744336 - 08/22/13 08:45 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

My papa(grandpa) said my husband and I can grow veggies in his old garden in his back yard next year... but its covered in grass and weeds and the thing he used to bring the soil in is done for, it doesn't work anymore, which means we have to do this by hand.  We want to grow as many things as we can if possible but I'm not too sure what yet.  I know we have potatoes.  Papa has LOTS in the cellar.  I want to get a hold of some carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, beans, green onions, peppers, but what else is there for a big beautiful garden we are hoping to grow one day?

my idea with no green thumb experience was to grow a shitton of chives for years and prepare the land for real crops in the future.

I grow almost all the things you listed plus strawberries, artichoke, pumpkin and broccoli. My mother grows red cabage and celery. I live in pennsylvania so you are farther north so artichoke might not grow but the rest would.

any advice about prepping the land?

we dont plan to start until next planting season but should we tear up the earth a year ahead of time?

My house used to be some old man who passed away. The garden hadnt been used in years and was completely grown over with weeds. Used a combo of weed wacker, lawn mower and hand pulling to get it cut down. Then i bought some big sheets of black plastic to put over it to kill everything. It mostly worked, dont expect your garden to be weed free the first couple years unless you are spending a lot of time weeding.

I grew up on a farm.  Those weeds will be beneficial.  Till the land now and mix it with spent mushroom compost.

Thank you for the advise.  But I think we're going to stick with regular fertilizer.  My papa will have our heads on a silver platter...

I wasn't necessarily saying cube compost.  If you've got until next spring though, you can prepare that soil well.  Do not cover anything with plastic or that black stuff.  Cut the weeds down and then bury them.  That alone will bring great results.

The soil can be tilled by hand and most the weeds killed at the same time.
...If you like exercise
Mow it low and leave the clippings there (no collector bag). Sharpen a flat bottom shovel and use it to turn the entire garden over to a depth of 15 or 20 cm. Wait a week. Turn it all over again. Wait a week. Turn it all over again, breaking up the soil blocks. Turning it over 3 times like that stresses the plants like crazy and kills most, they become compost. Bermuda grass may eventually need to be dug out by hand. Use a sharpened hoe to kill baby weeds.
I put in a new 1800 sq ft garden like that (and got strong abs in the process :smirk: )

As for what to grow, I once heard a doctor give the simplest and best advice: the vegetable thats healthiest for you is the one your willing to eat.
Personally, to your list I'd add siberian kale, kale, and zucchini. Zucchini leaves are edible if cooked (a bit like french kissing a cat if raw) and the kales are extremely hardy, with some protection you'll have fresh kale coming in from the garden when the nights are -20°C
[Winter Growing Methods]
Also, take a look around for prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and dwarf mallow (Malva neglecta). They are very common in weedy lawns/abandoned gardens in north america and are good eating once the winter snow melts. The prickly lettuce gets bitter in summer, the dwarf mallow (if you have it) is good all year, I like it in oatmeal. Henbit is another great edible 'weed' to let stay, it pops up just as soon as the snow melts too.

The problem with the sheets is they are essentially just litter. Shit still grows through them and then you have more of a mess.  Every house I've bought has had that stuff somewhere in the yard, and it's just a never ending nightmare to get rid of it. Going completely natural makes the most sense to me.  Although, if it's a small enough garden, some type of "cage" could be of some use as to keep away those damn birds and squirrels from reaping the rewards of your hard work.

Well, this house is over 100 years old and has been in my family for all that time.  I don't think there is any plastic anywhere.  In my earlier years, I don't remember there being anything attacking the garden except for those pesky bugs...

Sweet.  I just noticed your location.  The farm I grew up on was in the north east and gardening was a tad easier.  I live in the dirty south now, and pests of all sorts are abundant. Good luck with the garden. Hard work pays off and it's so cool to eat what you grow.

I know!  My papa used to plant like 5-9 rows of potatoes and he made enough to feed the whole family for at least a year or 2  At least we won't have to buy our veggies anymore.
