Nidula or Cyathus or something else?
    #18744029 - 08/22/13 07:36 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hello,

I've been seeing these odd little buds cropping up all over my garden.  They start out as white buds resting on the ground, and after they grow a bit they'll burst open into the cups you see above.  Inside each can be found ~3 little grey "stones".

They grow in tight clusters.

I asked someone off topic in another thread and they suggested Cyathus or Nidula but it didn't seem like they were positive.

I live in the PNW, Willamette Valley in Oregon to be specific.

1) What exactly are these?

2) What impacts would they have on the area around it?  I.E. do they just degrade stuff and throw spores or is there something I should know?

3) Are they a late summer fungus or are they year round?

I can figure the rest out if I just know what they are, but I am mightily curious.

Thank you good sir!

Though these seem much smaller than Crucibulum laeve, and the periodoles are specifically black.  Though ofc I'm uncertain of their morphology so, I suppose I'd better keep searching for more literature/

These are also growing on a soil/manure compost bed, and a few places seem to suggest they prefer wood?
