What's the deal with WinZip?

I've got Windows 7 and can't unzip files because the computer automatically unzips them with WinZip and apparently I have to buy a copy in order to do that and it doesn't appear that there's any other program that unzips files. I thought zipping/unzipping was a basic computer function? Is that not correct?

Winrar is trial software that will still uncompressed stuff for ever. It will just say your trial has expired 2435 days ago while uncomressing shit. WinZip might do the same but I haven't used that since the late 90's.
7zip is free, will compress stuff better than winzip, similar to winrar but will never bug you. Use that uninstall the others.

You can't compress stuff with winrar unless you buy it. Right?

Yeah, when I saw winzip in the thread title, I thought my toilet had transported me back in time 15 years.
Just in case it did, I know something you don't: Yes, he did have sexual relations with that woman... Ms. Lewinsky.

lol, yeah, koods. Thankfully the creator of 7-Zip made a free solution to archive files. If you haven't hopped on the 7-Zip bandwagon yet, now is the time.
I did, however, come across one archive that only WinRAR could decompress, but as mentioned, the author made it so that it never deactivates. It just displays a message saying the program is not free, which is basically a gimmick to strongly encourage or trick a person into buying it.
Seems like people who share files prefer WinRAR. I never see 7-Zip archives on the Internet, only RARs (7-Zip cannot make RARs, it can only decompress them; it has its own alternative).

Terabytes, motherfuckas! Why are we still compressing files? Files that need compression are already compressed.
The days of having to compress the ASCII porn to send to my friend over a 300 baud modem are over.

Right. And compression will either compress it by only a negligible amount or leave it the same size or actually make it slightly bigger (the algorithm fails to compress the file and extra work is created, or something; the file will be the same as the original when decompressed though). However, koods, you're forgetting that these programs have a "Store" function which does not employ compression but there are other aspects of an archive format such as putting multiple files into one file and splitting files into multiple parts.

The last time I used winrar was for archiving.
How is the encryption in these programs? That's another possible use, I guess.

Maybe just delete winzip? I'm pretty sure that windows 7 has built in unzipping capabilities. You probably just have your default program for .zip files set to winzip.
I used to roll with xp and even xp has built in unzipping
