Can I use two modems?
    #18743761 - 08/22/13 06:37 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I live in a large house. We have comcast. The modem/wireless router is on one end and I am on the other. The signal doesn't really reach me. I do however have a modem/router combo that works with comcast and a cable connection in my room. Is there any way I can use it to get Internet in my room?

You have a few options. Get a wireless repeater.. add another wireless access point.. move the router to the middle of the house and maybe get a high-gain antenna for it.

Thanks for the replies. Moving it isn't an option because the house owner wants his computer directly plugged into it. I was just hoping I could use another modem because I already own a modem.

Thanks for the help.

I second this a repeater would be the way to go. and if you set up 2 or 3 you can have access anywhere close to the repeater even outdoors. You can turn a modem into a repeater but it takes some DIY dicking around with firmware and what not, your better off just buying the repeater.

1) buy ethernet over powerline adapters.

This is your best option.
You can score some 500mpbs for pretty cheap now.
Back in the day, these things would make our touch lamps go crazy!

But, sure you could use 2 modems.
But you will have to pay Comcast for service for the 2nd modem.

Or run T5 off a splitter up to 75 feet away onto a wireless router. Works  like a charm basically a hard wired repeater . So to end up with 75' plus the range of the wireless.

Previous solution are good and maybe best, but i would like to tell something more:
- If the signal is only too low (your pc can see connection, or you get only 1-2 lines) you could go with an indoor wirless solution like awus 036 of alpha network that connect to your pc. I have it and is very usefull also in public place and for steal some connection...XD

- Did you consider to change modem/router in a better place (middle of the house?

As stated above is what I'd recommend if you can run a wire. I ran a wire from the modem in the office  to my room.  Then hooked up another wifi spot, from that i could hard wire my xbox and computers or go wireless.  I'd like to check into a hub without wifi.

Just learning about the  ethernet over powerline adapters now.
