Let's talk about CORN

I have found a new feedstore close to home, and I notice that they have bulk corn, so along with a sack of wheat I am considering buying a sack of kernels also.
They supply regular corn and also the smaller grained 'pop' corn. Is either suitable for use.... because the popcorn is literally twice as much in cost, which seems a bit much.
Also, are there any specific prep. methods I should be aware of ? I have had a test sample (1kg) hydrating overnight to see how much it hydrates.
Typically I am growing Pleurotus. sp, but also plan on doing shiitake.

My opinion is that WBS is better than corn.
Keep in mind that corn is mostly sugar/starch. WBS is a more diverse spawn with more inoculation points.
While corn WILL work. Better options are available for the same price or cheaper.

I'd go for the wheat. It's almost like rye.

Do you have sources for this information? From my brief research it appears that corn has approx 6% starch & 6% sugars. I would say that wheat contains greater rates of starch.

Go for the wheat berries!
I got rye berries for my first grain spawn because of the high ratings I hear. Good things about wheat berries too!

Also, I have just calculated the hydration rate of a 1kg test sample, there was some kernel loss due to spillage, but the hydration is comparable to wheat also:
Wheat (dry): Wheat (hydrated) - 1:1.6 Corn (dry): Corn (hydrated) - 1:1.5
On a larger scale basis, with spillage loss being a smaller % of overall grist, I would conclude that corn may be closer to 1:1.6 also.
Can anyone else give some comments on Wheat vs Corn?

@blojo - Rye is uncommon in my country. Wheat however is in abundance, as is corn.
What 'high ratings' are you referring to? Specific to nutritional content, or simply performance based comparative observation to corn?
I'm not trying to get on anyone's case here, I just hope to understand the benefits of each product.

A quick google search yeilded the following.

Starch
The major chemical component of the maize kernel is starch, which provides up to 72 to 73 percent of the kernel weight.

Ive used corn a bunch of times, as spawn and by itself. it colonizes pretty quick, but u hav less innoc. points. I love using pretty much all grains, including corn.. yet many others dislike corn.
I'd go for the wheat if I was you man. My best flushes came from wbs that was mostly wheat.

@wildernessjunkie - thanks for the links, I will read when i get home. I don't know what the hell I was referencing, as the figures differ considerably. Apologies to all for the miscommunication of facts.
@thestormseye - You're right, I'll just get a couple of wheat sacks. I was querying corn as an alternative, as the last batch of wheat I bought was fairly filthy, lots of chaff, husks and other crap. The plus side though is that of the small sample of wheat I got from the new supplier appears to be of a better grade.
