Go to school or keep working? decisions decisions
    #18743042 - 08/22/13 03:48 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Been trying to decide what the more logical route would be these past few days. Perhaps some third party feedback might be useful.

I have been attending a mid-size university the past year ND a half about 10 hours from my hometown. It is decent, shitty rural location with a bunch of rednecks and nothing to do and a bunch of stoners. The only plus is that I established a social circle somewhat up there which is non-existent where I'm currently at. I am currently studying psychology but am iffy about it. My vocation is uncertain and I feel miserable up there moreso than down here. The pros to my current situation is that I have a decent job that pays $200+ weekly. I can continue to work and possibly save up and move out and figure out what to do with my life but remain in isolation albeit making decent money or return to university and a social life but lose a steady flow of income and return to being broke. Not a big fan of college, kind of see it as a big scam. I have a good job that requires little work and pays decent, not a job one would come across often. Perhaps I will continue work and take a few courses at a local college, not sure yet. I'm often very indecisive that's my problem haha

So what do you guys think? What would you do?

200$ a week isn't very much man, if your going to quit school and go work your either going to have to work more (which I'm sure you already know) or get a different job.

My rent alone is 900$ a month, thats not including bills for power, internet, my car, food, ect. . .

I too attended a college alike yours, I decided to leave about 3/4 ways through... I think I made the right decision although I spent about 15 K on something I can only vaguely use now, instead of finishing and putting what I learnt to use.

What exactly are you going to school for? you mentioned psychology but is there a specific thing you want to do with that? Or are you just kinda doing it for the knowledge and getting a general feel for that area?

Dude you can't live off of $200 a month. Even if you saved every penny for a whole year you'd be broke in a couple months living on your own. Even though I think college is a scam aswell, It's your best bet at the moment. You're probably living on campus amirite? That's housing your parents are paying for. I also assume you use your income for food/weed like the typical college kid.

If you really feel like dropping out then get a better paying job lined up. Not trying to put ideas in your head or anything... but even if you had a job lined up and had to quit school to work you'd be fucked for a little while. You'd have to sell drugs or something just to find a place to live and eat. Take your parental funded education and housing for a little bit longer. It's miserable but listen to this little bit of wisdom. If I could go back in time and tell myself one thing it would be "Don't fuck around with school".

Unless you find a job that pays like $2500 a month ATLEAST, don't bother leaving. Once you're on your own it gets HARD man. Most kids our age are like "YEAH WE'RE GUNNA MOVE OUT AND SMOKE WEED INDOORS AND NOT HAVE TO CLEAN MY ROOM". It's not worth the stress. Trust that.

Yeah, I hear ya. I work long hours already but my job pays minimum wage :/ so my pay is usually close to $250 weekly. I know people that work minimum wage and get paid bi-weekly!

But yeah, psychology is mostly due to interest. It's a subject I've always found fascinating especially depth psychology but I don't really know what I would do with it. Most others I know in uni seem to be studying the typical marketing/accounting/business and hope to get a job right out of college but I really don't see myself allocating my time and resources to these ventures when i find them dull and sullen. I'm very introverted which is of course subject to a lot of critique in a university setting. One thing I love about my job is that it is reclusive and easy. Most of the time I am reading and learning new things on the job while making money.

Reminds me of the quote from good will hunting when he says, "You dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a fuckin education you coulda got for a dollah fifty in late chahges at the public library"

It depends on the person. I went to college for a year and decided it wasnt for me. I got a union job at the age of 20 and right now I'm 24 making $32/hour, usually 2 hours a day of overtime @ $48/hour, with FULL benefits that I dont have to pay a dime for.

I also work with a guy who got his bachelors degree in business and didnt use it. So that was a waste of 75k on school loans. Also my sister got her bachelors degree in psychology and it took her almost a year to find a job in her field and I think she only makes like $20/hour maybe

But if you have a passion and want to pursue something you know you'll enjoy doing then do that. If not, then it seems college is a huge waste of money IMO

I tend to agree that getting into debt for a 4-year degree may not be wise, especially if you don't really know what you want to do.  However, part of the college experience is becoming exposed to subjects and individuals you might not otherwise have come into contact with.

The other issue is that you might decide later on life you want to pursue a career where a degree is the norm.  Yes, you can go back, but going to school in your 30's is a lot harder.

...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge.  It is an indellible experience; it is forever known.  I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.

I forgot to mention the THOUSANDS of dollars they make you spend on text books. That shit is the worst part!

trade school before college. not enough of us have a practical skill set.  2 years and you have a solid way to support yourself, then go to college a little bit wiser and a whole lot more responsible.

Are you doing something that is going to be hard on your body for the rest of your life?  Do you have a lot of opporunity for advancement?  Those are things to keep in mind as well.

No the work isnt anything difficult. A far as advancment, I get a minimum of a $.70 raise every year a stated in our union contract. Alot of the senior people here make upwards of $50/hour. So thats all the advancement I need. Plus I have the opportunity to retire at the age of 52 if I want

Well, I think I decided on taking off for a semester and just working for the next couple months as I try and get my shit together.

Maybe attend trade school as one poster mentioned or even try out a different university next semester. New beginnings and whatnot.

Guess I'll just see how life plays out for now...

My vote is in to go to school. Just transfer somewhere else if you don't like your current school.

Been attending this school for about a year and a half. It's okay. Nice nature reserve on the campus, but the quality of education is subpar at best. Met a few cool people, but most tend to be within their little cliques most revolving around greek life and all that bullshit. The college I attend is like one big high school. Same faces everywhere you go pretty much. At least I was able to meet people at this university, I guess thats a bonus for living on campus. Last university I attended I was a commuter and met absolutely nobody but the campus was huge compared to the current one. Oh yeah, and the food on the campus is shit, just disgusting! Maybe I should try a new university soon I guess. Might even try and study overseas
