Shroom ID: Amanita Muscaria?
    #18742367 - 08/22/13 01:13 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I'd like some help identifying this mushroom. I found it last night growing in front of a tree in my front yard. This morning, I found it had grown so much overnight, it split it's cap. If I didn't know anny better, I'd say this was the infamous Amanita muscaria. But I know they only grow in the pacific northwest, and I live in Tennessee. I live at low altitude and too far south for these. And I live too far north for Psilocybe cubensis. My exact location is 36°22'49.44"N, 87° 0'39.75"W.

Habitat:
Front yard with many trees. There is so much shade, we have no grass. Only moss and ferns grow.

Gills:
Large, white.

Stem:
2" tall, about as thick as a quarter.

Cap:
3-4" wide. White/Golden brown, similar white spots to Amanita muscaria.

Spore print color:
n/a I have not disturbed it, or made a spore print.

Bruising:
brown

Other information:
Seems to have grown very fast! Only last night the cap was almost spherical. Today it looks like this:

It's an Amanita, but not muscaria. It looks pretty close to Amanita cokeri or another species within sect. Lepidella.

If you find an Amanita again, try to dig out and photograph the base.
