Bill O'Reilly on marijuana

So i'm flipping past "The O'Reilly Factor" last night and I stop and listen to what he has to say for a second. He starts talking about some situation in which I guess he was at a concert where a guy lit up a joint and put it away after O'Reilly bitched at him about there being kids near by.
After he mentions that situation he says something to the effect of "you see, if we legalize marijuana that guy can blow pot smoke in your childrens faces and there would be nothing we could do about it".
So i'm thinking, "That's O'Reilly's justification for keeping weed illegal"? Why hasn't someone told him that those who endanger kids would be liable for child abuse charges just like now weither marijuana is legal or not. "
I wish his kind would just come out and say "Look, we're keeping weed illegal because we don't like the culture surrounding it.".

eh... second hand pot smoke doesn't get you high anyway (in my experience)....
what about kids inhaling cigarette smoke during a closed-window, 4 hour road trip with mom and dad?
maybe if it's about the kids, they should pass laws against that sort of thing.. and legalize ganja while they're at it.

Yeah good point.
I'm telling you. It all comes down to "we don't like your kind".
What a stupid reason to justify keeping weed illegal. If you blow weed smoke into a kids face you should face the same charges as someone who feeds a kid beer. COME ON!

I understand his point. The same thing can be said about cigarettes, and we all know how you can not smoke in public buildings hardly anymore. Keeping marijuana illegal for this reason is assinine. I actually agree with you on this one Learyfan.

I've watched the O'Reilley factor a couple times, and just about every argument he makes seems to be about the children. He bitches about rappers and other musicians setting a bad example for kids. He bitches about the movies kids see cuz they have sex, drugs, cussing, and violence in them. I'd sure hate to be one of his kids. Personally, I don't believe in shielding children from the real world. I figure the sooner they're exposed to it, the sooner they can adapt.

I'm not surprised. Most people on this board would probably agree.

Yeah, and as Bill Maher says "What about the vetarans of childhood? You know the old saying 'it takes a village'? That's just a saying. Us villagers have other things to do."

That's why you sit down with your kids and explain these things to them. It's called parenting, and apparently Bill O'Reilley's never heard of it.

Oh BS. Every kid should not be exposed to sex and violence. That is just assinine. There is nothing wrong with protecting a young child from these things. Explaining about violence and sex and exposing children to them are two very different things. Going by your parenting model, it would perfectly acceptible to let a five year old watch a movie like Seven or Deer Hunter as long as you explain it to them. Explaining it to them is not going to keep them from having nightmares about people shooting themselves in the head though.

I had nightmares as a kid, and guess what? I got over them. If you think your kid might get nightmares from something, fine. Don't show it to them. But if they want to see it, I say let 'em. If they get nightmares from it, then they've learned their lesson.

parents can't teach their kids everything, and kids will probably absorb more from our culture and media than a parent can keep up with. kids don't need to watch TV. it's garbage. i'm not going to hide my kids from world events or local news as some parents do. i just don't think they need to be watching murder after murder every night on TV. i'm not going to tell them any of the classic mythologies as to how babies come into the world. the day they ask me that is the day they learn about human reproduction. but they don't need to watch TV-ified sexuality at a young age. i don't want to sheild my children from the truth, but from our culture's lies.

Someone should explain to Bill O'reilly that if we end the drug war there would be fewer liberals.

With that logic, if my kid wants to try out a little heroine I should be fine with it. It is this kind of hands off upbringing that is producing so many punk ass kids nowadays. They have no respect and think the world owes them something. You can see it on this site everyday.

I'm not advocating kids using heroin, but they should at least be exposed to the truth about drugs, violence, etc. This is why I hate programs like DARE.

If you're not going to let your kids watch TV, will you allow them to go to friends' houses where they do have TV?

you take your examples way to far.
originally all he said was that banning everything won't do as much good as properly educating your children.
and you interpreted that as license to let all children see all sex and violence.
now, if he wants to allow his children to watch scary movies that's tantamount to letting them do drugs?
your arguments would seem slightly more credible if you didn't always go to the extreme on things.
