Mental "illness"/disorder
    #18736025 - 08/21/13 05:52 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I put in the quotes because I dont like that term but its the most common phrase so...

Of those of you who were diagnosed with a disorder how many of you knew there was something up or knew what it was that was wrong?
Also who thought they had a disorder but didn't at all?

A friend confided she thought she had bi-polar disorder and it got me thinking about the nature of mental disorders and if those affected tend to realise something's wrong and what it is

I had no idea I had schizophrenia for 3 years. You sort of must just change one day and you think it's just a bad day but the bad days don't stop coming so you get used to it. You just think this depressed, paranoid, anxious world you're in is just how it is, since you've forgotten what feeling well feels like.

One of the hallmarks of schizophrenia is that you do not have insight; you do not know something is wrong. In my opinion this is because the brain generates most of reality and when certain cognitions are distorted it seems like reality is just that way, rather than it just being you.

Although I was experiencing a struggle I put it down to developmental changes, personal failure and inexperience of life.

Turns out none of it was my fault. I tried so fucking hard too. It was just the dopamine / serotonin balances.

It was some of the most traumatic, alienating, scary times of my life. Fortunately, I can put it all down to brain chemistry and move on.

Whoa that first paragraph worries me :P How is it the diagnosis finally came about if you dont mind me asking?
And again your third paragraph sounds very applicable to me however it might actually be the case

I went way off the rails and head my head on the wall. When my brother came around and saw me like I'd been beaten the shit out of (but it was just me) he took my straight home to the countryside, back with my mum. She took me straight to Community Mental Health who started with it being a drug induced psychosis but later changed it to schizophrenia.

It was fucking funny I thought I was receiving messages from the Holy Spirit and I had to do all this insane shit to survive. It was all a test. hahah. It has to be up there with the most insane shit ever thought / done.

Almost everybody know when something is wrong with them. The tricky part is accepting it, finding the source of the problem, and then finding a solution. Denial is dangerous.

I couldn't really see something was wrong. I was experiencing basically no emotion or 'flat affect'. I think this is the cause of lack of insight; one feels content to merely drift thinking they are alright.
