That was a fascinating read. I have read similar things about primitive villages and their gifting systems, wherein nobody owns anything permanently, all possessions are cycled through the village every few days. And so they live in peace.
My favorite, although I have done little research, would be the Native Americans, or the pre-Spanish invasion Aztec/Mexican civilizations.

Western civilisation. Drugs and more information than anyone could ever hope to learn at the click of a button.
Not to mention clean water, reliable shelter, reliable-ish health, good food, a job for almost everyone in a field they enjoy if they play their cards right, hobbies and things to do and all sorts of stuff...we've got it pretty damn good imo, comparing us now to history 50, 100, 1000 etc years ago.

Most intriguing for me is their focus on Earth and spirit and the Aztecs extraordinarily complex knowledge of astronomy and chronological feats beyond their time. But both the natives and Aztecs/Mayans were always at war, and Aztecs performed sacrifices. They too, were as lost as we are now it seems. There is no perfect civilization I guess.

I loved much of american indian culture and practice. However there was some serious downsides imo. A very rigid culture in many ways with a huge macho male bent. Losing "face" was feared worse than death and proving bravery was paramount. Not in all tribes however but the vast majority.

Now that I think more deeply into this the more I find myself relating more with all the sword-wielding nomadic civilizations. Something about always being on the move and seeing new things is very appealing to me. Plus I carry a machete and hike for 30 miles so I am basically a sword-wielding nomad.

Many American Indians would go on a walkabout and cover large distances. But for overseas travel you're right about that.
My choice is based on the fact that they seemed, unlike most humans to have found a way of dealing with the massive agression and psychological dysfunction problems much of our species have. Plus I like hunter gatherer cultures.

That's pretty amazing! I would have to say that the culture I've always been inspired by was the japanese. I've always felt that their never ending quest for perfectionism to be inspiring. From being a swordsman to being a carpenter; it seems that the goal is always to better oneself through the art.

Great read, ice. And a fantastic way they have of acceptance. That's the main debilitator on our present day shit. Everyone tries for the same cookie cut; American perfect. Rarely able to accept themselves, for themselves, and in turn others for themselves. I like this a lot. Mine would have to be Bedouin/gypsy socio-structure. I think all cultures who realize that everything besides food is bullshit, and then begin looking at the stars are rad, too.

So glad I read this I love how they transmute anxiety & other negative emotions/experiences into something positive and productive. I agree that self-reflection is the best way to do that, and dreaming is a wonderful opportunity to self-reflect. I also appreciated how they recognized negative entities and their ability to don masks.
I'm not really sure that I have a "favorite"... I don't know much about different cultures, embarassingly. When I was little, I thought ancient Egyptian culture was fascinating, but as an adult, I don't like the idea of having slaves. I'm also partial to Renaissance culture, where the flourishing of art and pleasure took place. (I like ancient Greece/Rome for the same reason). I guess they had a feudal system, though, and I don't like that either.
I like how the Inuits are all about sharing everything. And I really like the gods/structure of ancient Norse religion. I enjoy the access to information that being a modern American provides me.
IDK, I'm just rambling.

Rome was pretty white, and provides the basis for most white culture, so that stretches it out some. Still, it's been a good 500 years. We made cars, planes, and the internet.

For now I like the French because they know the value of good food and drink (I was genuinely stunned when I realised the whole of France has huge gourmet local markets everyone buys from, and it wasn't a tourist thing). I also am in love with greek people and food, they are the friendliest I have come across by some way and the food is even better than in France.
I have no idea about the past but that group sounds extremely interesting, I will have to finish reading that website.

"Magic" they way it's supposed to be used in this corrupt world:
The Senoi claim there has not been a violent crime or an intercommunal conflict for a space of two or three hundred years because of the insight and inventiveness of the Tohats of their various communities. The foothill tribes which surround the Central Mountain Range have such a firm belief in the magical powers of this Highland group that they give the territory a wide berth. From all we could learn, their psychological knowledge of strangers in their territory, the Senoi said they could very easily devise means of scaring them off. They did not practice black magic, but allowed the nomadic hillfolk surrounding them to think that they did if strangers invaded their territory.

Feudal Japan. The idea that there were Shoguns and families that constantly fought for control for hundreds years just amazes me. To them, that was just the way the "government" was. Whoever had the most powerful army ruled. And they were an island that was separated from the rest of the world, and it's just interesting to see a culture develop on its own.
They even had an era where the didn't allow people from outside of Japan to enter, and had no contact with the outside world. They were all about honor and family. Not that I necessarily agree with their principles, I just find it fascinating.

In said society, becoming "dishonored" was effectively a death sentence in its own. You were persona non grata to anyone who mattered in your life. Just think about the business people who kill themselves when their life's work goes belly up, or people in small towns who kill themselves when their outed as gay or something else equally socially bad.
When you put it in the context of their culture, the only thing unusual is that they had a name and ritual for it, and that it achieved something other than the act itself; your families honor was restored. That fact must have created an additional pressure to do it. Whereas in our culture nothing good can come from a family member who kills themselves, in this context it actually serves to restore the family.

Have you read the Odyssey? One of my favorite lines in a book, basically it details Odysseus immediately after Troy where he destroys a city and kills everyone in it, retreating before their allies can catch him. Homer shamelessly depicts this barbaric act as heroic
Not that I agree with the action, but Homer's complete absence of morality is hilarious. Christians are no different in action but have polluted the world with their shame, a religion built on hypocrisy

I don't think I would categorize Homer as amoral; rather he embodies the cultural morality at his time, which is significantly different from the Judeo-Christian system of ethics that tends to permeate modern Western culture. I agree with you about Christianity, though.

Another great line from the Iliad, during a battle some guy would start yelling about how he would die before giving his ground. "The heroic and brave Agammemnon". And then literally like two sentences later the guy would be shamelessly running away. Think this happened like 3 times in 2 pages at some point.

Yeah, I saw a documentary on tv about them it's probably floating around on the internet somewhere. They basically converted the missionary into their lifestyle and inspired him into the field of linguistics.

I searched but could not find it. If you come across it please PM me the link. I did just order the book however. Thanks for that. I'm always looking for a way to like at least a tiny portion of our species. It seems that when I find it it's a very small culture in a rainforest or something that has never come in contact with any major cultures. Then of course they are in immediate danger and by the time I've heard about them they're usually toast.

These guys have no recursion in their language, so they basically live solely in the moment because they have no words for past.
Sounds interesting, but I didn't hear anything about their drug use or their musical system. The old musical systems can be surprisingly primitive and boring (such as 3-tone systems), as far as my understanding goes its only been the past 4000 years or so where music has evolved to near its current form

No one said anything about drug use or musical systems. How about paying attention.

I could say the same to you.

The acceptance and availability of drugs in a society is a part of their culture. If I can't easily find mushrooms, marijuana, and alcohol. I don't want anything to do with that society

It is not part of their culture if they don't use them.

I'm skeptical one could be more satisfied with life than I am right now, have everything I've wanted and it all turned out to be better than I thought it would be

If you watched that video would you think that the average American is happier? Or even more logical?

Only speaking for myself
Definitely going to agree that on an overall they're better off, but in our society we as individuals have more opportunities. Granted we're missing the opportunity to be a part of something like that, its the price we pay. Less for most, more for few I don't have much, a duffel bag with some laundry and a guitar pretty much. But the life I lead out here, wouldn't trade it for what they have or what a billionaire has.

As the Amazonians so precisely put it, our heads are "crooked" If we get our heads straight (live in the present, have evidence for beliefs, live on the ground not in the sky) than I believe we can be happy, even in today's modern culture you can get your head straight. I've unknowingly been trying to get my head straight these last few years, and I notice people with crooked heads seem so lost and deluded; religious followers, politicians, most of the general population.
You can always sense a straight head when you meet one.
With confidence I can say I've never been as happy as those people, except when I'm lost on a big hike. They will always be more fulfilled than us though.

That sounds like a lovely community to me. Very similar to the kind I envisioned upon reading your question. If say, for all the places it referred to dancing I can exchange such with a rhythm instead, then for me it is perfect.
Reading this left me with reaffirmation of my past dream resolutions, and resonated as truthful insight imo. Perhaps some of desire to trip is to let the unconscious mind spill over into the conscious and perhaps this desire might not be as strong if our culture were encouraging of dream exploration and mastery.

The rich mythology, philosophy and ascetic spiritual ritual practices of OTD probably surpass anything that has been mentioned here.

Reading about the dream culture of the Senoi and watching the "language of happiness" documentary made me realise how much there is to learn from other cultures / anthropology / linguistics.
My interests have always been more focused on the natural sciences but this little excursion has made me feel like I need a broader perspective.
It affirms my thoughts I was having about getting a Philosophy of the natural Sciences master.
It opened my eyes a bit more.
I also got into lucid dreaming a year ago and quit after succeeding gave me nightmares. The Senoi have shown me a simple method to work through that and I am starting to try again.
All of it just hit home somehow.
