Looking for a deep existential film

Just a movie that really gets you thinking. Something like Tree of Life, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Seventh Seal, etc. I don't mind foreign films with subtitles or older movies.

Horror- 'Jacob's Ladder'

Comedy- 'Nothing'

Sci fi- 'The Cube'

Drama- 'The Phantom Carriage'

Avant-Garde/Neo-Realism- 'La Dolce Vita'

These popped readily into my head, but I'll extend the list as I think of more.

I liked Enter The Void the best out of all the ones I've watched. It is long and boring though, but if you liked Tree of Life you ought to have no problem with that.

Baraka and Samsara

Two movies without words shwoing ambient shots of humans from every corner of the world in many different daily rituals. Slow cuts and great music. Made me feel being part of a larger whole.

Before sunrise, before sunset, before midnight.

Just two people truly connecting through meaningful conversations in various stages of their lives.

Very simplistic yet extremely moving and thought provoking.

The Trilogy of Alejandro González Iñárritu

21 grams
Amores perros
Babel

And Some of Lars von Trier
Melancholia
The Boss of it All ( I love it!!)
Dogville

and maybe
Magnolia - Paul Thomas Anderson

You could also watch some micheal moore's movies

I hope you found some answers here, OZA; there are a lot of quality recommendations.  I especially second Brian Jones, and several others like Babel, Baraka, and really, really recommend Dogville.  Dogville is made by arguably the finest director living, Lars Von Trier.  His films don't usually become too successful in America, as he's Danish and refuses to fly and isn't involved in anyway with Hollywood, but they are all phenomenal.

He's also made:

Breaking the Waves
The Idiots
Dancer in the Dark
Antichrist

and others, and they all explore deep themes of humanity, but in different frameworks.  'The Idiots' is a foreign language film (most of his are in English and even take place in America, with elaborate sets built in Europe) and is a comedy, largely.  'Breaking the Waves' is a drama, 'Dancer in the Dark' is a musical (starring and scored by Bjork!- this is one I recommend above all others), Antichrist is a horror film.

Nice work, evenlock.  I can't frickin' believe I forgot to mention Lars Von Trier in my earlier post, but seriously, I think a guy like you, OZA, would enjoy his films (from what very little I know about you).  They're among the most perfect I've ever seen.  He's the founder of the Dogme 95 school of filmmaking.

On a different note, 'Magnolia' is an interesting, if not self-indulgent, watch.  It's a 4 hour dedication that gets a bit overwhelming, but there's a lot of quality (especially if you like to hate Tom Cruise).

WATCH VON TRIER  :scott:

"Begotten". Its an experimental film shot in all black and white with no dialogue. The creepiest film I ever laid eyes on, but it was also very good. It doesn't make sense until you see the credits either.

Also- "the Holy Mountain"

"The Fountain"
"Only God Forgives"

Koyaanisqatsi
Waking Life
Pi
Intouchables (French)
La Haine (French)
le scaphandre et le papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, French as well)

Hmmm, there's so many but that's all I can think of right now.

List of quality directors, off the top of my head which may be of interest.

Bela tarr - Satantango is tremendous.

Tarkovsky - Very good russian director

Kurosawa.

Godard - more politically minded, very thoughtful.

Linklater

Luis Buñuel

Hope this helps.

Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris (1972).

Much better than Soderbergh's 2002 version, but it's length and pacing may be a turn off to many viewers. Personally, I think it's stunning.
