CONROE, Texas—Police have uncovered a massive pot growing operation in southwest Conroe. Their only problem is that they do not know who is responsible for it.
They found six fields of marijuana deep in the woods west of FM 2854. They believe the combined worth of the plants is about $10 million.
“This is probably one of the larger finds,” said Sgt. Dorcy Riddle with the Conroe Police Department. “At least the last ten years, probably the largest one of a grow of marijuana.”
Investigators say a routine investigation led them there and the landowner had no idea the plants were on the property. The acres are so remote that heavy equipment had to clear a pathway to remove them.
Police believe their suspects started months ago and likely lived there for periods of time.
“There’s evidence of sleeping arrangements,” Sgt. Riddle said, “Cots, water pumps, a generator and other items indicating the suspects had been in the area for awhile.”
At nearby McDade Park, families were grateful the marijuana never fell into the wrong hands.
“It don’t surprise me,” grandparent David Naveux said, “But being in a park with kids that shouldn’t be going on.”
“I hope the authorities catch them because I just don’t want that kind of thing distributed around schools,” parent Chris Boule said. “There’s a lot of young kids and a lot of opportunity for people to distribute that to people who don’t really need it.”
The plants were taken by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, which will dry and incinerate them. Officials say they would have been ready for harvest in a few months.
Prior to clearing the site, investigators performed around-the-clock surveillance for more than a week in the hope the suspects would return. They never did.
“We figured they probably knew we were already aware of the grow and had abandoned the grow,” Sgt. Dorcy Riddle said.
It is still not clear exactly how many plants they grew. Estimates are between 10,000 and 20,000.

" Estimates are between 10,000 and 20,000."
That means less than 10,000.

I can't believe these evil culprits got away. Who would do such a terrible thing in a park around kids? /end sarcasm
Seriously if they had to plow a path to get out there and rip them down I doubt any little kids are gonna stumble across them, sounds like they had it pretty far out. What a waste

Yeah I'm sure glad they busted this op too. Now we don't have to ever worry about that demon weed infiltrating our centers of higher learning and commandeering the minds of our innocent children.

Yes, the evil marijuana might interfere with the kids' doses of safe, government-approved Ritalin and Prozac.

Actually I'm familiar with the area they found those plants, and it isn't what I would consider rural at all. It's halfway suburban. The topography is completely flat too. Not a wise place to have such a large grow op, it was bound to be seen by helicopter. Farther east or farther north would have been smarter.
