UPDATE: Aerial mycelium with lots of pins? Best pinset ever with aerial mycelium.
    #18739676 - 08/21/13 08:44 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I birthed 10 cakes of Mazatepec three days ago.  They came from a sponsor but it was a different on than I had used before.

When the cakes were growing I noticed pretty extreme rhizomorphic growth all around the cakes.

Anyway.  I've NEVER had aerial mycelium before on my cakes (and this is after about 50 cakes so far.)  So I'm starting to think they might be contaminated.  I only thought of this because of a recent thread that concluded someone's cakes were displaying aerial mycelium because of contaminant.

HOWEVER...

I'm dubious about the contamination possibility because I am seeing plenty of healthy pins all over the cakes.  I would think that if there was a bacterial contamination they would have smelled bad when I opened the jars or not pinned at all because the myc was too busy fighting bacteria (sorry if that's an incorrect way to say that, does mycelium really 'fight' bacteria / contamination?)

Mist and fan five times a day at least. (although the last 24 hours I was gone to the city for a while.)

Pictures here.

Last picture is of a Hawaiian cake in the same chamber that appears healthy with no aerial mycelium to speak of.  But it's mycelium was not nearly as rhizomorphic as the Mazatepecs.

As always thanks for all input.

UPDATE: Lots of pins but still aerial myc.

These are some of the best pinsets I've ever had and yet my cakes continue to grow aerial mycelium.  Is this normal or unheard of?

looks like you could be misting too much

Although your cakes don't look like pics in the link i would be weary.
Mist less often and just fruit them out as usual. first sign of stink, toss em.

I have seen this before, and it usually has a blue tint to it, but that is pretty thick stuff on your cakes. When I grew out cakes and experienced this I decided (after lots of research here on the Shroomery (hint, hint)) that it was blue bruising of some sort and that I needed to quit handling the cakes while providing lots of FAE and not to let them sit in water. BTW, The pins peaking out of that crust look very healthy and I believe them to be fine (I would eat them).

Check out Tmethyl's thread

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17232067#17232067

I would give them 24hr soak after harvest and make sure to provide plenty of FAE with a SGFC, and all the while fanning the shit out of them too boot.

My opinion is in no way gospel, but if your cakes are pinning through that mess I think you are doing something right. :vato:

I've looked through tmethyl's 'how it should look' threads and can't find anything that looks exactly like this.  I feel like I might be in a situation where 'only time will tell' but if they are contaminated then I want to get the cakes out of there right away!  I don't want to chance having anything spread to other cakes in that fruiting chamber.

Phosi,

That's the thread I was referring to when I said I saw another thread that talked about contamination causing aerial mycelium. RR says that contamination WOULD NOT be individual strands (my pictures show pretty individual strands of mycelium) and the cakes in the thread you linked to NEVER pinned whereas half of my cakes have pins already.  That's why I'm dubious about contamination.  So in that respect these two threads are very different but believe me, that was the first thread I re-read when I saw my cakes like this.

I definitely don't over mist. I never mist if there is even the slightest sign of leftover moisture from the last misting.  As I said, this has NEVER happened before in this chamber on some 50 cakes previous.  Perlite has been re-wetted / changed twice in the five weeks this chamber has been fruiting.
