Nice find. Are you going to harvest it?

edit: looks like you already did unless its growing in your car

make sure you only eat the soft parts of it. I like to cut off the very edges because they're too squishy, then cut out the middle parts of the "leaves" that are closer to the heart, as they're a bit too woody.

The forum choice is fine. You definitely want to cook the fungus. If you want to preserve it, a good method is to butter-fry them then move directly to a ziploc bag and keep in the freezer

I found some COTW this morning, I was so excited:thumbup:

I filled my canvas grocery bag, but could only fit about half of it.

It made a great stir fry!

Ok so had a few questions on mushroom hunting figured I might just post in my own thread and not start a new one.

1. Can I expect a new fruit anytime soon at the exact same location? This was my 2nd hunt, 1st time solo, would be cool if I had a new spot to go harvest occasionaly or whatever but I dont know how it usually works( plus i didnt cut the stem, i yanked it out so that might have hurt the mycelium?)

2. Can I expect more chickens in area directly around where I found this one?

3. I know people I've read about people selling oysters or whatever they grow at farmers market or restaurants, at prices of  like 16$/lb. Do people sell wild mushrooms to restaurants or anything? Cause I feel like with these chickens if they grow that big, I could have more than a restaurant would want and some for me and to share with pals. Not really trying to make serious dough but maybe a couple bucks off some extra harvest?

Unfortunately, Chances are you will not find any more chicken of the woods from that patch this year. The reason is because you took the whole mushroom. Unlike other mushrooms the proper way to harvest chicken is to trim 2-4 inches off the edges. It will continue to grow this way and you can come back and harvest every 4-6 days or so.

Every time i see the whole mushroom picked it doesnt usually fruit until the next year. I thought one of my patches died after somebody picked the whole mushroom it didnt fruit for 2 years until it came back this year.

As far as finding more in the same area, it is possible but all my finds have always been singular. I havnt found 2 chickens growing off seperate logs in the same area yet.
