Mitral Valve Prolapse- anyone?

Just curious to know if there are others on this message board with this heart condition. I was diagnosed about 7 years ago, not long after I originally joined this site (under another s/n). I've been through the crucible with this thing and I believe I have enough experience to offer advice or just words of comfort to others who have or suspect they may have the same issue. For the most part I've experienced everything that comes with it, so feel free to pm me or post here.

Can the valve just be replaced?

It can, and is sometimes recommended in extreme cases. I'm not one of those, but those who have had it done report a major decrease, if not complete cessation of symptoms.

This is from the National Library of Medicine: Quote:
Mitral valve prolapse is a heart problem in which the valve that separates the upper and lower chambers of the left side of the heart does not close properly.
The disorder is almost always benign and many that have it experience little to no symptoms. However, those with symptoms tend to experience heart palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, fatigue, intolerance of exercise, panic attacks, low blood volume/pressure, etc. For anyone who suspects any issues I strongly advise seeing a doctor; some of these symptoms could be related to other problems that may need immediate medical attention.
As for me learning about my condition, When I first started experiencing symptoms I assumed I was merely becoming sensitive to cannabis use. Instantly after smoking my heart would race, and I found myself having panic attacks if I approached my typical high dose. I reduced the frequency of consumption and the amount used, but after a while this did nothing to prevent the palpitations or curb the panic attacks, so I was forced to give up cannabis after 20 years. Of course I have one of the few disorders that pot exacerbates!
Even after giving up pot completely, I began having random spells of these intense palpitations, becoming really disoriented, cold and shivering and genuinely fearing for my life. Innumerable episodes and E.R. visits later, I finally consulted a cardiologist and was diagnosed with MVP.

I had a bicucspid aortic valve instead of a tricuspid valve.
Bicuspid means the pieces of tissue in the valve needed to seal off blood flow and then open again only had two pieces instead of three.
I had my entire valve replaced with one of these in January of this year.

It should last another 15 years before it needs to be replaced again soooo hopefully it lasts longer than that.
Now I have a bigass scar down my chest

That's interesting. What kind of symptoms were you getting before the replacement? Hopefully you get more mileage out of that thing.
Makes one appreciate the intricacies of the human body and the phenomenal proliferation of technological advances.

I had no symptoms but my EKG showed sever stenosis AND it was loose at the same time. Meaning that it wasn't opening or closing completely and regurgitating blood back into the chamber and not providing sufficient blood to the rest of my body.
Basically if I didn't get it replaces ASAP I was fucked...and hard.
I'm hoping I get a lot of years with it as well...but that means a lot of lifestyle changes that need to be stuck with. No more pot smoking (edibles or vaping are options) more exercise and more healthy food.
I hope you don't have to get your mitral valve replaced...it really is a scary thing to go through...but its really not that bad.
If you want to chat some more about anything feel free to pm me!

Sounds similar with what happens with me when I go through my episodes. The palpitations can be pretty bad, but I think it's the poor blood circulation that causes the worst of my symptoms. I was told that my heart and valve appeared to be fine, so hopefully replacement will never be an issue.
It's strange though; I'll go through a period, maybe a few weeks or a couple of months, where these episodes will become frequent. During this time I become completely intolerant to exercise, caffeine, sugar and anything else that causes the heart rate to pick up. Psychedelics are definitely out of the question, and even a discussion of the DMT experience once brought on all the familiar stages of the DMT flash (without rending the veil), causing quite a serious panic attack.
Yet, I eventually will go for a long period of time with no symptoms and am able to perform strenuous exercise at the gym, enjoy my morning latte, go for a run and still feel great.
It has brought out some good in me though. I find myself much more patient these days and I am far more compassionate than before. Maybe it's just the psychonaut in me but my favorite thing about all this is watching what happens to my mind when this stuff occurs. Lots of novel and interesting things in the mental processes when one starts facing the reality that physical existence is ephemeral and any moment could be our time.

Yes,its very scary realizing your entire existence can be changed with the beat of your heart. Honestly,my life has improved since my replacement.
I can exercise without worrying about my heart, take drugs that effect my heart rate because now it can handle the stress,I've lost weight because i can exercise.
No more palpitations or shortness of breath. I feel almost normal.
Except the damn clicking noise!

I'll bet man, I can't even stand mechanical clocks/watches around me when I'm high Thanks for the rating, I'd reciprocate but I haven't posted enough yet I loathe having to start a new account after posting here for a near decade, but not only did I forget my password but also the password to the email I used with that account

Well, I guess I kind of am new; I've had no computer for the past 2 years or so and am just now getting back online It's strange to be typing again, I feel out of my element and a little illiterate. My grammar has suffered during my hiatus
