Monotub questions.. good enough for natural light ?
    #18737263 - 08/21/13 12:30 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I'm getting my monotube ready - I'm making 6 holes the size of small tomato soup cans (burning through the tub)... 2 on each long siDe about 4 -5 inches from bottom, with sub 3 inches full.. Then 1 on each small side (how high from bottom?)

I will be keeping my tubs under a large window that produces soft light. Will this be good?
Tips?

Holes on the smaller sides go at the top.

My tubs get all their light from a window, but they sit right in the window and it's rather bright.

Cool. Is it ok to keep the holes the same size? (Tomato soup can size)
And where should I put it on the top? Few inches below top? And 5 inches above bottom for lower holes is ok? Puts it 2 inches above substrate

I have my sgfc and mono in a closet with door open and southfacing window. Its somewhat shady, mush are growin and they love it. I don't think there is a difference between strong indirect light vs somewhat shadier area.

I don't know how big a tomato soup can is to you, but my holes are 1 1/4" So if you're talking about a progresso can that's 3.5" wide... no, that is WAY too big. If you're talking about a campbells tomato paste can that's closer to 1 1/2" then yeah that's alright. But usually it's 1 1/4" - 1 1/2"

Do you own a drill? If not, go get one. Then get a 1 1/4" speedbor.

Just measured one from the fridge, and yes, they're 2" None the less, these are monotubs, I like to limit my misting/fanning needs to the least amount possible. 2" holes vs 1 1/4" holes is a BIG difference in FAE, there is a lot more misting needed for 2" holes, whereas my 1 1/4" holes I can get by misting 1-2 times a day as opposed to 4-6 times a day with 2" holes. I work full-time so I don't always have 6 times a day to mist/fan my tub. So I use smaller holes, fan for longer when I do it, but I still only need to do it twice a day.

Ill just pick up a 1 1-4 drill then.

What about location of the holes? 5 inches from the bottom on long sides? What about shirt sides?

I put my holes on the short sides literally RIGHT below the handles, make sure the latches are up, and put your speedbor as close to the handle as you can without hitting it. so maybe 2 - 2/12" down from the top of the bin. as far as the long sides (low holes) I mark a line at 4" and make sure the BOTTOM of my speedbor is lined up to it. 3-3.5" sub, .5" - 1" from the top of the sub. just high enough that my myc won't touch/colonize the polyfil haha
