Growing outside?
    #18737534 - 08/21/13 01:38 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I'm going to start a grow outside. I'm going to be growing them in a forest. Is this bad? Things I should do? Things I should avoid doing? Anything is helpful

As far as the things you should do, yes, wait until next year... Not sure if you realize mushroom season is almost over but you're late for an outdoor patch by about 4 months....

Lol dude, like I said, seasons almost over, for a reason, it's gonna get too cold before your patch will produce. If you've got the extra spawn and you want to waste it, go ahead. But don't be upset when you don't get a single mushroom because the temps have dropped and your myc can't grow fast enough.

Over?  It's not even autumn.  The season has yet to begin for a lot of things.  But he;s right that whatever you plant won't fruit this year.

1) What are you growing.
2) Where at in the world are you?

Generally it's best to plant in spring, and the myc will spread throughout the year until its fruiting time in the autumn.  At least that's the case with a lot of wood lovers here in the PNW.  If you set up the patch now the myc should survive but it might not colonize the whole patch and it certainly won't fruit until next year.  However a lot of fungus can survive overwintering really well.

There are a few things to consider when picking a spot.
1) Isolation.  People = Bad.

2) Water.  Ideally near a stream as the humidity will keep them from drying out so much, but be sure to know the annual water levels or else it could wash away your patch in a flood.

3) Shade.  More sun = more drying = more watering needed.

It's all pretty simple really, like really simple.  But I think we need more information on what you're growing.

EDIT: Are these jars colonized with cubensis?

I'm growing Cambodians and teachers. I love in Texas and have a perfect spot near a river and I have brf jars that are already colonized.

Why not do an indoor SGFC or something?  For some reason I assumed some sort of wood lover haha.

I think a better plan would be to make nice with him and grow indoors, then take half the harvest.  Because it looks like you're just screwing yourself over.

Well you messed up in the first place by having a partner to do this with, this is a much easier hobby when you're doing it alone. Also, you're still this stubborn on putting them outside? As another member already stated, doing so this late in the season will not produce anything until NEXT year. Which is why I told you not to waste your time, but if you're alright with not getting anything until next year (MAYBE, if it even survives the winter) then have fun with the shrooms in 12 months when you could have just dunked and rolled your fully colonized cakes and had something in 2 weeks with a SGFC

Also... partner... everythings at his house.... can't go over there unless he's there.... won't fruit inside your own house.... hmmmmmm, you aren't by chance a kid living with his parents still are you? Cause unless that's the case... just make yourself a damn SGFC put it in the window and get your shrooms in a couple weeks. Do an outdoor patch next year.

Perhaps work out a system where you can go over and care for them?  Because if you're already planning on watering them every day then it's not too much extra work I suppose.

Keep in mind cubes like warm temperatures to grow, theyre not a cold loving species.  IIRC they like to fruit at around 20-22 C so I seriously doubt they'll do well in the autumn/winter.  They can tolerate a bit lower than that I believe, but not winter temps.

However Texas seems to have a really varied climate, so maybe. But that may just be me not wanting to tell you that it'll outright fail.

You're 18? Yes, you're pretty much still a kid. Move out of your parents house before you grow mushrooms man.

And everyone else posting from this point on... he's still living with his parents sooooooo... :notards:

I reckon that if you start maybe just one more thread, you might get the answer you're looking for. This must be about the 5th thread you've started, so maybe #6 will be the one

Wow, people are so close minded, calling the OP stubborn when he could easily make it work.

I would say right now is the deadline for any outdoor grow. It would have to be a small patch with a higher spawn/substrate ratio. OP can't start a huge patch but OP lives in Texas, and cubes can handle lower temperatures. If OP did a few small patches they would colonize quicker and hopefully fruit in 2-3 weeks. The cold would slow them down but they would certainly fruit.

Just make sure you use a container and you'l be fine.
