3 or 4 holes in a quart jar lid

Question about RR's video on how to make quart jar lids:
I believe he says you can make 3 or 4 1/16th inch holes in the metal lid for GE. Has anyone tried it both ways and noticed a difference between the two? What would happen with 2 or 5 holes?
Also, how many holes would constitute a "fruiting condition", i.e. provide enough ge that an actual mushroom would start to grow in the jar, assuming that is that humidity and evaporation and lighting were also in appropriate fruiting conditions.

RR, in the videos, suggests 4 holes when using an entire SFD to cover the metal lid.
Personally, I prefer one 3/8" hole almost dead center.
Grains are not preferred to fruit directly off of. Spawning to bulk will greatly increase yields. If you're set on invitro fruiting, then you'll need to change the lids, as they only allow GE, not FAE. FAE is required for fruiting, as evaporating moisture from the surface of the substrate is the number one pinning trigger.

I don't recall who mentioned this factoid but someone said that using 4 1/16th inch holes is acceptable but colonization time would be increased with more, but it's not done that way to prevent loss of moisture in the jar. This statement was made without regard to RH measurements, so I was wondering if I could take a quart jar, give it 5 or 6 holes, but maintain a higher RH to prevent moisture loss with the hope of speeding up colonization time. It's such a basic issue, that I thought someone would have experimented with this, I bet someone has.

The total area of a 3/8th inch hole is roughly equivalent to 9 1/8th inch holes. have you compared your 3/8th holes with 4 1/16th holes and found any difference in speed of colonization/rate of moisture loss?

You want extremely high CO2 during colonization of grains and bulk substrates. More GE doesn't mean quicker colonization times. I've done 3/8" holes, 1/2" holes & two 1/4" holes in my lids. All colonized at the same rate. RH doesn't have an impact on your colonization rates with grains or bulk substrates. It' impact is during its fruiting. You can always dunk your grains for a few minutes before spawning to bulk to make up for lost moisture.Quote:

No, I have not as I've always cut my SFDs to size for the holes instead of using the entire disk over the lid.

I use the whole SFD with (4) 3/32" holes. That's half way between 1/16" and 1/8".

Awesome! I've been making lids today and I accidentally made 1/2" holes instead of 3/8". I was afraid my grains would dry out. Thanks!
