A new study published by the journal J-Stage, and funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, has found that cannabinoids – whether THC, CBD or CBDV – were effective at blocking a certain enzyme which is known to cause cancer, and is produced in large amount when cigarettes are consumed.
“These results suggest that the pentylresorcinol structure in CBD may have structurally important roles in direct CYP1A1 inhibition, although the whole structure of CBD is required for overall inhibition”, according to researchers.
CYP1A1 is an enzyme which isn’t dangerous at low-levels, but is produced in large quantities when someone smokes cigarettes; at large doses, the enzyme has been linked to cancer.
Researchers state that; “Accordingly, CBD and its related compounds, which are potent inhibitors of CYP1A1 activity, would be useful as a lead compound in anticancer chemotherapy.”

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense."

So the cannabanoids can actively fight that one pre-cancer enzyme? That could be good I suppose. But only by accident

I agree considering the Fukushima deal.... reportedly 40% increase in thyroid problems in children born since the disaster... weed couldn't hurt

Oh god the irony.
The harmless, illegal drug prevents cancer that the harmful, legal drug causes.

In the US marijuana is a Schedule 1 controlled substance. Here's the criteria for Schedule 1 according to http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/schedules/
Quote:
Substances in this schedule have no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse.
Some examples of substances listed in Schedule I are: heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), peyote, methaqualone, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine ("Ecstasy").
Obviously preventing cancer, even in this narrow context, has no medical use. Clearly the government doesn't want to allow people to smoke anything because it's bad for your lungs... oh wait, tobacco. Clearly, as an intoxicant, marijuana must be prohibited and could never be legal... oh wait, alcohol.
Well, the hyper-militarized SWAT teams and DEA soldiers need something to keep them busy, and asset forfeiture provides much needed funding to them. That's much more important that allowing people access to a natural medicine that helps the terminally ill as well as countless others facing non-fatal diseases that cause tremendous suffering.
Much progress has been made, despite the still insane methods of our country's self righteous drug warriors. I don't want to start a partisan argument here, as I have been registered as an independent since a few days after my 18th birthday. But, I am terrified of Gov. Christie's bid for the 2016 republican presidential nomination. Look at what he's done to New Jersey's medical marijuana laws. He's a prohibtionist zealot, and I shudder to think what the DEA and Bureaus of Narcotics Enforcement will be able to impose on the public under his auspices.
