ID Request, maybe Phaeolus schweinitzii?
    #18737012 - 08/21/13 11:27 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, I was foraging today in the woods near my house and I stumbled across these mushrooms. None of my identification books had this mushroom in and I couldn't find it anywhere on the internet although it might be a Phaeolus schweinitzii. Sorry for the bad quality photos, all I have is  a camera phone.

Habitat:
This grew on a large decaying tree stump in deciduous  woods. The stump was in a clearing that has been created by people burning and felling trees.

Gills:
The whole mushroom looks solid although I did notice some pores.

Stem:
Not a stem as such, it's  kind of a clustered mass. This part is slightly lighter than the cap.

Cap:
Each cap is around 1 or 2 inches. The whole fungus was around 10 inches in diameter and width  and around 3 to 4 inches tall. The caps are yellowy/creamy coloured and the edges are not defined, they are curved.

Spore print color:
I couldn't get a spore print.

Bruising:
Bruising is dark brown. It doesn't bruise immediately either.

Other information:
This fungus smells very appetizing. It was very easy to slice through and when  pulled apart it is stringy like  cooked chicken.
