Are the gymnopilus junonius mushroom species edible?\

Hello,
I found (after looking at species in my area which is New Jersey, United States) a species of mushroom that I have identified. I am certain it is the species gymnopilus junonius. I have researched for hours every detail. The pileus is convex. It has a light orange color. The gills are thin and a lighter orangy color. The overall shape is bulky and the stike is about 1.6cm in diameter. The smell doesnt seem to be bitter but that is normal. I have compared pictures with several of these species and I am sure of it.
My question is, is this species edible? I have looked and asked many different sites and some say poisonous and some say edible.
Many Thanks, Leo

Please post pictures, no one can responsibly tell you if the mushrooms you found are poisonous or not with that description and lack of pictures. With the information provided, for all I know you found some deadly poisonous Galerina marginata...or something entirely else.

Leo, you are basically describing Omphalotus illudens. Hell, you are basically describing a lot of orange mushrooms. There are some nuances to fungal morphology that you may not realize off the bat. Post pictures, as Byrain suggested.

G. junonius is definitely not what I would consider an edible species, it's extremely bitter and unpalatable, and some variants of it contain a powerful psychoactive toxin psilocybin.
But as the guys said, post pictures here before you consider eating anything. Some orange-ish mushrooms that grow from wood are extremely toxic.

Psilocybin is not a toxin, a toxin is something like α-amanitin.

I don't agree, there are several definitions of what a toxin is, and psilocybin fits in most of them. Just because some people find it pleasurable, doesn't make it good or any less of a toxin. If you want to say that a toxin is only something that causes lasting damage to the body, then all of those mushrooms that cause short lasting gastrointestinal upset are non toxic as well.

Psilocybin is not a toxin, the difference is very clear at higher dosages. How pleasurable or unpleasant something is has zero bearing on if its a toxin or not. The gastrointestinal upset is caused by chitin, not by psilocybin and even if it was caused by the psilocybin that alone does not make it toxic in the same way a stomach upset from a meal does not make the food toxic. Mushrooms that cause gastrointestinal upsets like Agaricus xanthodermus are still clearly different in effect from psilocybin in effect at higher dosages. If you do not trust this, I suggest you should try eating comparable amounts of A. xanthodermus and P. cubensis.
(No, I seriously hope no one tries this...)

From what I've seen and read, I've concluded that it's a "remarkably non-toxic" poison...
I tried expressing this before, but I think the body eventually classifies it as a poison, and here's the process that, multiple people I'm sure, can attest to:
Stage 1 - "Woah look at all the cubensis!" Let me promptly thank the Shroomery and the good folks at Pennington and..okay well, shit I ain't got a dehydrator, guess I'll just dry 'em on the window seal, that'll be fine, I'm gonna eat these things everyday! Shit, makes ya a better person! guess we'll eat 'em fresh...nom nom nom... ya know what? not bad! Not bad at all! I'm living like a fugg'n KING!
Stage 2 - "Another flush?! Goddam cubensis, rigorous bastards, shit, I really need to get a dehydrator, running out of space in the fridge...ugh...nom nom nom...jesus christ these things are awful!
Stage 3 - "Ha ha ha. Maybe...maybe if I fry 'em up in an omelette, yeah yeah, won't taste the horrid little bastards...maybe a tierra misu or ...uuuughck! okay, okay, hold it down, they're not that bad, gonna have a good time tonight, good vibes good vibes...where's the lemon juice??
Stage 4 - "Oh. My. God. Fuck this shit. I'm switching to Oysters...maybe Lion's Mane...just not worth it man..nom nom uuuughck! ohhhhhhh "
Stage 5 - At this point your setting on the couch, tear in your eye, completely jaded and munching on a handful of cracker-dried, trying to figure out where you went wrong in life, hoping to never see another bag of vermiculite again....

Lets say for example an unknowing person ingests a certain amount of psilocybin containing mushrooms. After some time they begin to notice extreme changes to their consciousnesses, motoric functions etc. I'm very sure they would consider themselves poisoned by mushrooms. What then makes muscimol a toxin, and not psilocybin? Slightly lower LD50?
