Will this work better on my homemade carbon filter?
    #18736349 - 08/21/13 08:07 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I added on a homemade carbon filter to a 4 inch duct fan to reduce smell in my boa constrictor/snake room. However it has cut the cfm rating in half at least, so I was wondering if I added another 4 inch fan to the equation hooked up by ducting conjoining the 2 would the cfm rating go back up to full strength? What if I added a 6 inch to the mix and had it going filter, 4 inch fan then 6 inch fan all connected blowing air --> -->?? Thank you all for your help if anyone does help lol. I love the shroomery though, it is the only forum that I am a member on. This forum has the friendliest (most of time) and most helpful people on the interwebz. It is hands down the most educational forum around covering a wide aspect of all imaginable topics. Doesnt get better than this!!!

if I were having this issue I'd install another 4" exhaust fan and a 6" intake fan all with thier own ports and not connected together.. that's what I'd do any way:thumbup:

hey man, I'm new this is actually my first post on here.

your best bet before spending any money on a ventilation setup is to measure entire area to be cleaned and decide how often you want it cleaned- lets say a 20'x 10'x 10' area, that would be 2000 cubic feet, so a 400cfm fan would theoretically scrub the whole room once every 5 minutes per hour (from my experiance actual efficiancy is about half that) I try to put my intake on one side and exhaust/filter on other to help the flow. 12 complete air exchanges is more then likely enough for a small room like that, but thats only if your filter is keeping up- ifnot maybe just make a longer fiter with same inside diameter to increase surface area and in conjunction increasing flow

that being said home made carbon filters are a little different so you don't have any exact cfm measurements..  I know that when I needed one to scrub a certain skunky smell out of a greenhouse- I made some home made ones and ended up breaking down and just buying a 18" long one from the guys at foothills filters (can find them in ebay-i'm not affiliated nor do I have alot of other experience with different brands) but I can say, their filter on one 600cfm fan cleaned the air better then my 3 home made filters each on one fan..  just my 2c but sometimes money spent goes a long way.

good luck

Alright, welcome to the forums buddy thanks for the input . I would come home tho and go change the water for my boa constrictors and have a nasty smell when they shit. I fixed that but my homemade cage for them needs to be sealed off better due to them taking a piss and it leaking out a crack onto the floor rather then being absorbed by the aspen chips I have in there lol. Idk tho cuz if I move il be taking the top half off of the 2 piece cage, I have one cage on bottom and one on top and the top part comes off wuith some screws. Its 6 ft by 2 ft and each half is 2 ft tall out of melamine wood. Spent 300 on it with plexiglass door. The bottom snake broke out a few times so iv been continuously adding onto it. At least she always goes under the dresser though. They are 6 ft right now, my buddy breeds ball pythons like bumblebees and shit, 5g a snake and his boa is 9 ft and huge. Theres 2 burmese pythons on craigslist here, soo tempting!! Id breed em but the economy isnt the best so I dont think id be able to sell em for that price.
