Straw supplementation for growing oysters and other species
    #18735505 - 08/21/13 02:15 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, id like to know if anyone has tried supplementing their straw bags or logs with bran and or gypsum ?

The reason i ask is because i hear that oysters dont taste anywhere near as good on straw then if they grew on wood.

The way i think i would do it would be to cut 1/2 to 1 inch pieces of straw then i would soak them for a few hours in water ,drain them for 1-2 hours, add about 10% bran and 5 % of the total of bran and straw worth of powdered or pelletized gypsum then PC for 2-2.5 hours at 15 psi Sound good ?

what do you think bran has, that wood also has, but straw doesn't? (wich would influence the taste)

gypsum is often added to straw i think.

you could sterilise it in a filterpatchbag with bran, but i think it would only give some faster colonisation times and somewhat bigger flushes, but probably not worth the hassle of sterilising straw, wich would have to be way smaller bags than you would do pasteurising.

Hi there,

Here at Aloha, we always fruit our oysters on straw with no supplementation because it is the cheaper substrate in this region. No one has ever been able to tell if our oysters were fruited on straw or wood because they are all so delicious, especially the P.o. PL. I would dissuade you from trying to supplement straw as it will most likely be a waste of time and money. Most Pleurotus strains are so vigorous they need no supplementation on most substrates. If you do want to experiment, the procedure you describes above sounds very reasonable. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask, and good luck!

I totall forgot about this thread,

honestly i dont know i believe it was rr or someone else who said that oysters on blocks of wood taste better than on straw.

Either way i dont think ill be supplementing apart from some gypsum.
It would be too much of a hassle like you say and a waste of time and money.

According to Stamets, oysters grown on straw actually have a higher sugar content and therefore taste "better" to most people. Taste is always subjective though.

I can't remember where I read that now either, but I remember reading it...

Never noticed much difference myself, oysters taste like oysters to me, and the temperature they're grown at seems to make more difference than anything else

So for like pink oyster which like 69 to 86  fahrenheit , the lower temperature is best ? Same for the colder temp oyster P.ostreatus, the colder the better ?

Absolutely.  On the colder end of their range they grow much slower but give denser, meatier, better quality fruits overall.

My best pinks grew indoors at about 70.

Just a side note on this thread, I toss straw logs of oyster down by the creek in the shade where they fruit for three or four years until the straw completely breaks down into the soil.  I like the taste of straw oysters as well as wood.  In fact, there is no standard 'wood' since every species of tree has different composition.
