i'm having so much trouble, first of all think my spore prints are contaminated. i try to start a mycelia cultures on pda but every time this white mold that smells somewhat citrus shows up, but no mycelia at least that i can tell. is it supposed to? the strain i'm using i think is Orissa, does Orissa grow in florida because thats where i picked them. i'm bummed out because thats the only prints i had and i was wanting to share my treasure with them but now i'm fifteen hundred miles from florida, and can't really afford to buy any. i've been as sterile as possible so i don't think its me, since its the same kind of mold every time

i guess it boils down to the sterility of the environment your doing it in and the instruments used.also how long you leave the cap in the jar.i've dropped a print in an hour(some say to do it for 24 hrs).i didnt attempt to grow from it though so i dont know if it was pure.i know the cap can start to rot in the jar.some have suggested hanging the cap in the jar so it doesn't touch the print itself. try getting some advice off some old hands in here.some of them are living legends

yeah i let mine sit for 24 hours i guess i'll just have to break down and order some spores. another question though, if i were to use popcorn as substrate could i use the water i drained after simmmering to start a liqiud mycelia culture

Popcorn will yield very poorly when fruited alone and is low in tryptamines (psilocin precursors), which in theory will yield weak shrooms. Corn is best used as spawn. It will work, even when fruited as a cake. Usually grain cakes yield poorly because of the limited water content held by the grain. Popcorn on the other hand, can absorb considerable amounts of water compared to millet or rye, and has the potential to yield fairly well. But do not expect results similar to or greater than that obtained using the PF Tek. There are many other grains that will perform better when fruited alone, but must be cased because of their limited water content. If you are planning on fruiting them as cakes, then the PF-Tek (or a modified PF style method) is your best bet. Popcorn is not a good choice to be strait cased or fruited in cake form due to its low nutritional content and low levels of tryptamines. I have tried birdseed cakes in the past, with terrible results on more than one occasion (2nd try I even mixed in a bit of vermiculite, but most likely not enough). What a waste of good spawn that was. In retrospect I should not have used so many cakes, but I never expected such failure. I even set the cakes right on some wet perlite, it didn't help any. I used popcorn as cakes when I first started experimenting with it to see if it were possible after my failure with birdseed. I noticed results that were a far cry from a good PF style cake, but much greater than that obtained with WBS.
(I will tell you that I got practically nothing from a 1/2 pint WBS cake, as compared to about 30-50 wet grams average from a 1/2 pint popcorn cake. Biggest mushroom weighed 21 grams wet, strain was Golden Teacher. Poor results IME, and therefore cannot be recommended. Potency wise I cannot say they were weaker or similar to brown rice grown shrooms, but I am positive they were weaker than manure grown.)
A layer of vermiculite on top can only help to add moisture. A double-end casing tek could allow you to fruit as grain cake such as millet, but I have no experience with this method.

its all good i planned on mixing the fully colonized jars w/ manure/ straw, letting it colonize then casing. i chose popcorn for the fact that its one of the more faster colonizing substrates due to the fact you can shake it easily and distribute mycelia easyer
