totalled my car today so I need a new ride

I was in a 6 vehicle accident and my car was deemed totalled by my insurer. They are giving me $7500 cash for it which I am putting towards a new car. I was thinking of getting a relatively new (~2010-11) subaru outback and financing the difference.
I was previously driving a 2007 chevrolet aveo and it was ATROCIOUS in the snow. If you drive more than 20mph when there is any snow, you will lose control, it blows all over the road when there is wind, it is super small and uncomfortable, and the transmission will probably blow driving in the mountains. Plus, I had blown a speaker and the airbag light was on.
Anyways, I'm looking at getting a 2010 or 2011 subaru outback. It's good on gas mileage, awesome in the snow, can go up mountains, doesn't break down. Thoughts on this? I really don't want a tank that gets like 15mpg but I really do not want something that will break down so I'm leaning asian.

GET A JEEP CHEROKEE. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Mine is 17 years old and still hauls ass through the snow. It can make it up a 4,000 foot mountain in the pouring rain. And its also a great around town car. I've had a few crashes in it and it still works great.
I've never looked back. Best truck I have ever owned....period.

Subaru is nice. I personally own a Nissan which I love and work at a Hyundai dealership(which are also pretty nice, just not the Accent >_>).

if you are not mechanically inclined.. go with a scooby.
if you are willing to fix and tinker with it.. go with a jeep.
if you do go with the scooby route.. make sure the vin number starts with a 'J' that means its made in japan and the chinese parts are minimal.

If you need a practical car that's effective in the snow, you can't go wrong with a Subaru. I'd maybe look at a 3rd/4th gen WRX, though. I've never been fond of the Outback.
Oh, and don't buy a Jeep unless you love fixing, or paying to fix, a terrible vehicle. I would also never set foot in a Hyundai and there are two Nissans I'd drive, neither of which would be practical family cars.

It's absolutely not that great. Owning a reliable Jeep is chancing odds that are highly unlikely. Newer year model Jeeps are particularly awful vehicles.
Like most Chrysler products, Jeep is overwhelmingly shitty.

A more practical and virtually invincible option would be a Toyota Tacoma 4x4. My favorite truck I've owned was a '91 F-150 4x4 with a 5.0. I would steer clear of any Ford trucks newer than that until the current year model, though.
It you've got the cash, the new Range Rover is simply fantastic in all areas. It's on the rather pricy end, however.

Like you suggested, older fords are pretty damn cheap and reliable. You are right about the newer ones.

I love Ford, but I'll be the first to tell you that their trucks and SUVs took a huge dive in quality from around 99 to 2010 year models. I currently own three Fords that I can't find fault with, however.

I currently own a 01 Ford Escape that is falling apart. Every time the brake pads need to be replaced so do the rotors from being warped, the transmission had a hard shift around 45-60mph two years after it was purchased, and it's rusting out every where like crazy.
So I agree.

Hmmm... In your 20's perhaps?
You will retire in about 40 years. If you take that $7,500 and invest it properly it will double every 10 years. That means it could be worth more than $120,000 when you retire at age 65 and pay you somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 per year - every year!- for your retirement.
I know it isn't fun or sexy, but JIL is right. Buy a beater and invest those funds!

I'm more curious what AWP is looking to purchase, and I'm unsure who your financial advise is directed towards.
And I'd advise against purchasing a beater, having some extensive experience with maintaining and repairing vehicles of all sorts over the years. You're going to end up pouring money into a piece of shit you'll hate. Purchase something within a range that you can easily afford with your current income. If that is out of the question, save for awhile to make a significant down-payment on a better vehicle.

If you drive in the snow a bunch, a jeep or four runner will work but they have no weight in the rear and can be prone to sliding.
A Subaru has traction when you step on the gas, the breaks, when you turn, on any terrain.
It will get you out of a lot of tight spots.
They are not the perfect vehicle for any situation, but they are amazing in bad conditions.

Don't listen to svs. He honestly doesn't know shit about Cherokees. If he had driven one for 17 years maybe I'd listen to his shit review, but for now I'd ignore his blatant ignorance of the vehicle.
I've only had to repair my jeep twice...once from getting out with pulling the emergency brake and having it roll down a mountain road and even then all I had to do was repair the exhaust system and the intake manifold.
Then I drove off an embankment and the 02 sensor ripped out.
Honestly I have never driven a more reliable vehicle....and by the way jeeps outlive Subaru's by an outstanding number.
Shame on you svs for pushing your opinions on others without facts to back them up.
Also my Cherokee is a 96... Not a grand Cherokee....just a Cherokee.
I've owned Subaru's before but honestly they were all shit off road. On paved roads I'll admit they are decent, but the moment I need to drive off road....fuck that.

I was leaning towards a subaru cross trek but ended up leaning more towards the 2014 outback. They are like the same price and there are quite a few reviews suggesting that the cross trek plummets in mpg after not that long. Plus, the outback is very spacious. I have $7500 to put down and I passed the credit check for 1.9% interest which is not too shabby. They said they could for sure beat the other dealership's offer of 22.9k without taxes included. I'm gonna go back friday to hammer out the price. Outbacks hold their value insanely well in colorado so it's only nominally more for a new one.

My experience, driving a hour each way, get something you like that's reliable. The outback is a great choice for AWD. Just dont get one with a CVT transmission. You will regret that later on with rebuilds.
Also dont be cheap on oil changes. Run full synth with good filter. Keep up with your transmission services, but only go through a subaru dealer. Also being AWD, make sure you replace all your tires every time you need some.

Income based repayment on my student loan + car payment will be easy to make. Subarus depreciate very nominally in Colorado. Besides, didn't the housing crash teach us that nothing is for sure non-depreciative? I need a car that will not break down and I will not die in. Life 101.

Sounds like a sweet idea.
You have that new car smell in your brain now don't you?
I can tell.
Perfect Colorado car.
They do cost a bit to maintain but if you love them, they love you back.
I miss mine, but not worth the extra cost in Hawaii.

It would hold if you kept the mileage down but you can't. It's a tool, and all good tools eventually wear out when you use them

I don't know what sort of Honda cars can survive the snow, but all I know is Honda's from the 1990's or so are fucking AWESOME.... drive them to the ground , literally, 250,000 miles plus.
I will also stand by the 1990 F150 V8 series or better, things are tanks.

You don't need a brand new car man. 2000-2007 Subaru's like the Impreza or Legacy are still really nice and would last a long time if you take care of them, and cost so sooo much less. Im driving a 93 Impreza, shit's bulletproof, engine is gleaming.

Don't drive, not yet anyways. Supposed to get my license in Sept. But I own a 2003 Hyundai Sonata. I'm not facepalming at what you drive, I'm facepalming at the fact that you had of traded in the Altima and taken even more of a loss on it than you already did.

It sucks I got ripped off but I figure the loan and the warrantee, plus me having bad credit made me pay the price of a brand new maxima. I didn't make out that bad seeing as how I got gap insurance, a nice car and paid the sales tax. 22.5 MPG doesn't make me too happy, though. The 290 HP makes up for it a tad.
Edit: just ordered myself a 5 gallon drum of Torco octane boost. Getting windows tinted and 2 12 inch JL audio sub woofers installed with a touch-screen deck. Cant wait.

I don't need to have a license, own a car or a better car than you to point out you got ripped off.. That's just ridiculous. And it wasn't just me that told you not to trade it in and get ripped off even further, pretty much every one in that thread told you the same thing.
So yeah..

Well the way I look at it, I would rather get ripped off on a car I actually like and that's not going to make me want to kill myself year 4 of the payments.
So I should of kept the Altima at 23k than a maxima at 32k?

Dealerships are scum. I regret going to one big time, its just I was in dying need of a car, mine was about to fall apart. I didn't want a Honda accord, I know they are nice and awesome MPG and all, but its not luxurious enough for me. Also, not as much power. Im in my early 20s and have a son so im already sacrificing a lot. I never go out and party anymore, I don't hang out with friends hardly ever..etc so I wanted a "cool" car.
Once this thing is paid off, probably by year 4, im buying direct. Ill probably get the new style Altima, for they'll be cheaper in a few years.
I know I spent way too much, but its really pointless to stress about it. Got 18 grand left on my payoff, fuck it.
Anybody a fan of that Torco Accelerator stuff? Its supposedly the only octane booster that actually works.
How would I get a new deck installed seeing as how my maxima already has an in-dash monitor screen? Can they take that one out?

Hahaha. I used to do that same shit in the Georgia clay when I was about 16... In my Camry. You have no idea how many times my friends with trucks had to pull me out of the mud. If you take the panels off of the inside of the trunk there's still a bunch of orange dirt in there.

What you should NEVER do is finance a depreciating asset. That is a surefire way to never grow your net worth.
What you should do is spend the amount you can ACTUALLY afford on a car. If that is $8000, then get a nice used car that will be reliable. When you blow money you don't have on a car you can't actually afford, you're just raping your own finances in the ass.
In 4 years you could have saved $18 000, plus interest, and be EARNING 5-7% interest, rather than ending up at $0 net worth at the end and a slightly nicer car. Both cars drive the speed limit from point A to B reliably. Why waste all the money?

Maybe you should learn to drive. Sounds like you drive like your in a video game.
You admit the roads are bad and you still get in an accident. If I was a judge I would say your admitting you knew the road conditions were bad and you still drove as usual. Hence, the verdict is it's your carelessness that got you in the accident. Your supposed to drive accordingly to road conditions. I really like it when people blame their accidents on the weather, etc.
For example: If there's 10,000 vehicles on the roads during bad weather and only a dozen get in accident. How can the accidents be really blamed on the weather. Shouldn't all 10,000 vehicles then be smashed up too? When it rains don't we all get wet the same. Weather my ass.
Blown speaker too? Sounds like your the type who plays loud music, texts on cell phone while driving.
I can't see how you go in that accident.

I've never fully evaluated the cost of leasing, but I would say it depends on how much you drive. Leasing has a fixed cost per month, so you have to drive a lot to justify it. You get free maintenance and a perfectly reliable car for a fixed cost. If you're only driving 10 000km a year it's probably not worth it, but if you drive 30 000 then it might well be.
Leasing is not the same concept as financing though. Even still, if you're mechanically inclined it's again probably not worth it to lease. There are more factors at play with a lease, though - financing a depreciating asset is never a sound economic plan.

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around.. you want to lease if you don't put on a ton of miles a year. Because then if you go over the mileage, you get completely raped. My chick got into an upside down lease that way and is still paying it off 2 cars later. But now she's almost out of it and is leasing because she only drives like 5 miles a day. I finance my cars because I put on like 25k+ miles a year, I think most lease terms are like 10-15k a year at max

Like I said, I haven't looked into it too much. I didn't realize there was a mileage limit on leases - in that case they are also never a good idea.

Stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. There's lots of ways. Not that saying that any of those things are GUARANTEED to appreciate, but if you invest diversely and intelligently they should overall.

Bonds are just loans and in my opnion not a good investment. Gold, Silver land and real esate are the best ways to preserve your capital and wealth.

But if they have a mileage limit and you live in a city with a very short commute to work(say 2-5 miles), how is that not a good idea? I almost never put more than 15,000 miles on my car a year because everything I need is within about 5-15 miles.

Because with a lease you are paying a fixed cost for the car. Cars basically only get wear and tear (ie cost money) when they get driven. If you are leasing a car, you always pay the fixed cost.
Let's examine a situation where you drive a lot less in a given month than usual. You still pay the same fixed cost on the leased car. You pay a lot less on the car you own, however, as it isn't gaining wear and tear, and you pay proportionally to drive that car, not a fixed cost.

The way I understand it, leasing is only good if you do commute less than 15,000 miles a year or so, (depending on the lease terms.. NEVER go over the mileage amount) Because then they charge you something ridiculous, PER MILE over the limit. And with leasing you generally trade your car in every 3 years, at least that's what my girl does.
I finance/buy my cars because I put on like 25,000+ miles a year, and I tend to keep them for a long time, mod them, and then sell them privately when done. A lease is a terrible idea for me.
With a lease, you never own the car.. you are basically renting it. When you are done with the lease you give it back to dealership and lease/buy another one.
I don't really know any more details or specifics as I've never leased. I've always bought cars used with cash, or my newest one was financed.
