A more practical and virtually invincible option would be a Toyota Tacoma 4x4. My favorite truck I've owned was a '91 F-150 4x4 with a 5.0. I would steer clear of any Ford trucks newer than that until the current year model, though.
It you've got the cash, the new Range Rover is simply fantastic in all areas. It's on the rather pricy end, however.

Or a 4runner, those things can crash into trees and drive away.
Like you suggested, older fords are pretty damn cheap and reliable. You are right about the newer ones.

I love Ford, but I'll be the first to tell you that their trucks and SUVs took a huge dive in quality from around 99 to 2010 year models. I currently own three Fords that I can't find fault with, however.

I currently own a 01 Ford Escape that is falling apart. Every time the brake pads need to be replaced so do the rotors from being warped, the transmission had a hard shift around 45-60mph two years after it was purchased, and it's rusting out every where like crazy.
So I agree.

We had a 'rabbit' when I was a kid and that fucker broke down like everyday. Maybe it was the exception though as I hear a lot of good things about VW's as well...

Hmmm... In your 20's perhaps?
You will retire in about 40 years. If you take that $7,500 and invest it properly it will double every 10 years. That means it could be worth more than $120,000 when you retire at age 65 and pay you somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 per year - every year!- for your retirement.
I know it isn't fun or sexy, but JIL is right. Buy a beater and invest those funds!

I'm more curious what AWP is looking to purchase, and I'm unsure who your financial advise is directed towards.
And I'd advise against purchasing a beater, having some extensive experience with maintaining and repairing vehicles of all sorts over the years. You're going to end up pouring money into a piece of shit you'll hate. Purchase something within a range that you can easily afford with your current income. If that is out of the question, save for awhile to make a significant down-payment on a better vehicle.

If you drive in the snow a bunch, a jeep or four runner will work but they have no weight in the rear and can be prone to sliding.
A Subaru has traction when you step on the gas, the breaks, when you turn, on any terrain.
It will get you out of a lot of tight spots.
They are not the perfect vehicle for any situation, but they are amazing in bad conditions.

Mine is 17 years old and still hauls ass through the snow. It can make it up a 4,000 foot mountain in the pouring rain. And its also a great around town car. I've had a few crashes in it and it still works great.
I've never looked back. Best truck I have ever owned....period.
is it really that great? i've heard mixed reviews. what year is yours?
like how they look, but dont know if i want one of these or not.
Don't listen to svs. He honestly doesn't know shit about Cherokees. If he had driven one for 17 years maybe I'd listen to his shit review, but for now I'd ignore his blatant ignorance of the vehicle.
I've only had to repair my jeep twice...once from getting out with pulling the emergency brake and having it roll down a mountain road and even then all I had to do was repair the exhaust system and the intake manifold.
Then I drove off an embankment and the 02 sensor ripped out.
Honestly I have never driven a more reliable vehicle....and by the way jeeps outlive Subaru's by an outstanding number.
Shame on you svs for pushing your opinions on others without facts to back them up.
Also my Cherokee is a 96... Not a grand Cherokee....just a Cherokee.
I've owned Subaru's before but honestly they were all shit off road. On paved roads I'll admit they are decent, but the moment I need to drive off road....fuck that.
