What has worked for you in the past for getting out of a full-spectrum life rut?
    #18733470 - 08/20/13 06:17 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

First steps?

Things that made a big difference?

Inspirational stories/outcomes?

Change in diet- eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, less meats and starches
Regular exercise- something in a group setting like martial arts works well for me
Regular meditation

Sobriety and a cross-country move worked very well for me.

Nothing.  I'm still stuck in one.  Been going on four years.

I've been wondering if I need to cash out all my shit and just start a new life somewhere.

Too much debt and not enough resources though. :feelssadman:

We're a largely strung-out (or strung-out in the past) hallucinogen forum and that's all we can come up with?

Thanks for those who did post though.

I don't know man, this is a tough one. Everybody deals with these ruts in differing ways. But I'd guess that the most effective way would be to change things up. Get out, too. Sitting inside pondering your rut is only going to make things worse.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.

I find myself not in the best social position right now either though.

I've been making new friends through work, but so far all that's led to is hanging out with a 17 and 18 year old who've now inducted me into their "gang" (healthy friendships already, yay!) and also (with some overlap) the local underground racing scene, but I'm not enough of a gearhead to really click with these types for like friendship purposes I think.

I've been debating about making an advice thread specific to making more friends in my very disorienting living situation. I might go ahead and do that actually cause this really is going to be a deciding factor in getting me healthy and happy again.

Great input as always, Niffdawg!

Go out into the desert, eat a bunch of peyote and find yourself.

You can always interchange desert with jungle and peyote with  ayahuasca

IDK if this is a common thing but I've even noticed I will put "needing to trip about it" as one more thing in between me and actually doing something.

one of the first things was I started reading a lot. my issues were more self-oriented so I read a lot of self help books. then i went trended more towards sobriety and just focused on trying to help myself get better. I got into a college and focused on school, which helped. I think it helped my focus more, and helped me learn to think critically.

so that, and i had a hobby, guitar, that really helped me get my mind off of things.

About a year and a half to two years ago I was extremely depressed. These days I'm happy as shit.

What has helped me? I don't know, nothing specific. Life just keeps happening. Learning, exploring, thinking, just getting wiser with time levels out the world perspective.

I can totally relate to that. I used to always say things like "I'll start doing so and so but first I need to take a trip to motivate myself"

You've also done a lot of acid. A lot of acid, mang. Glad things are more in your favor though!

I think if I'd gone back to my university and was living in the dorms, it would almost pull me towards being back on track. The self help books are a great idea, and thanks for reminding me I need to get back on track to being a guitar/metal god...

Not necessarily, but you'll bring them if you haven't resolved them already (not that this was a realistic option for me anyway heh).

Valid point man.

I was the same way - depressed as all fuck in the third year of high school, but by the time I graduated, man o man had my view on life changed.
To this day I'm extremely in love with life and everything and everyone in it. But I had no earth shattering realization or anything that made me turn my life and outlook around. Just kinda happened. Honestly, starting smoking herb had a lot to do with it (at least in terms of what direction I wanted to take in life, morals, values, opinions, I could go on) but later on only became a distraction and problem.

That, and I am always trying to better myself. I never even come on here anymore (not that this site is bad or anything) because honestly, I fucking hate just 'surfing' the internet - I have the attention span of a fucking gnat, and I need to be moving, doing something, and outside as much as possible. My friend has nothing but good things to say about mediation, and I've been meaning to start myself. Also want to implement the paleo diet sometime soon, every review and testimony of it online is nothing but glowing responses and reactions and experiences.

and it may sound corny, but... give this a read. this book really changed the way I think about things. I got it for something like $4 fucking bucks shipped to my door from Long Beach, California. In fact, I think the book was a single cent from a goodwill store and the shipping was $3.99. Best penny I ever spent

Head down.
Foot on the pedal.
Working the grind.
Non stop.
No thoughts of anything but progress.
Lift weights.
Run miles.
Drink coffee. Drink water.
Saving every dime.
Biding time.
Quiet modesty.
No drugs. Just progress.

My life turned around by cutting ties to...several unhealthy relationships, and moving several states away - launching my space vehicle on a new trajectory. Things are better now  All it took was drastic change. Full-spectrum change :taco:

I also don't smoke, barely drink, skate just about every day, eat fairly healthy, supplements, I feed my head positive thoughts from various sources, I work 60 hrs a week, save a large portion of my income, probably 75-80%, I invested in my education and got various credentials, AA degree, international certs from two agencies, study various languages, choose friends wisely. Most of those things have made life healthy, peaceful, and enjoyable.

Well said.
