And their schools are public so the odds of them getting the boot are minimal.

I don't really fish anymore because I've come to the conclusion that it is unnecessarily cruel. I used to fish a TON when I was younger. I just can no longer really justify tormenting an animal in such a way for the sake of novelty.
I will still fish on occasion, but I will eat what I catch.

I hook fresh water fish through the eye pretty regularly. More often than not they have pretty short life expectancies anyways. If I maim them to badly I just chop of their heads and take em home in the cooler.

That is my plan! I'll take them even if they are undersized too. If they are injured that badly there's no point in releasing them

That's what I think, poor fish. I put them outta there misery, all that swimming gotta get them down. So I bash them on the head with a rock and eat them.

It depends a lot on the style of fishing. For example, fly fishing a mountain stream, generally the fish don't swallow the hook. They only get hooked on the side of the mouth. They've got a pretty great chance of survival. On the other hand, fishing with power bait at a lake, too drunk to notice you've had a fish hooked for the last five minutes; that fishy is probably dead.
