involvement
    #18723254 - 08/18/13 03:09 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

If the current political landscape could change by incorporating the views of and consulting to those who use the product of the political sphere - social security, policy development, criminal justice, mental health care - i.e. service users, what would it look like?  Succinctly put, what would involvement feel like to you as an expert by experience i.e using services whether prison, mental health care etc?  I use the term expert by experience as meaning to have first hand experience of say Schizophrenia and receiving healthcare support as opposed to expert by training, i.e those who deliver those services.

If the American justice system, or any justice system in the world could value the involvement of it's service users to inform best practice, what would it look like to you?

Consider that the word itself "involvement" carries power imbalances.

I'd like your views for a project Im doing.

I imagine the implementation of an open review system tied to one's identity, similar to what has pervaded for consumer products.  People who have been verified to have made use of a 'product of the political sphere' would then be able to share their critiques of said products publicly.  There are some systems like this in place for medical doctors and other services already.

With open access to this system, any citizen could then make petitions which would garner some amount of support from the public or not.  These petitions would likely be in rough form, only serving as a general measure of public opinion on an issue.  This is similar to what Avaaz is doing at the moment.

The political representatives could then follow up with the issues pushed forward by the public.
