Would it be possible to....
    #1854889 - 08/27/03 12:53 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Use an old forgotten, dried casing (coir and vermiculite spawned with PF cakes) to start a new casing. The plan is to crumble the old casing into a mix of scotts 3n1, coir, and vermiculite and then case with coir. Any help would be appreciated...

depends how dried it was. If your're talking dry dry I wish you luck though I think your chances are slim. If it was slightly dry you have a chance just make sure to keep your casing layer nice and moist but not soaking. If youhave already fruited a few times off this cake then I would reccomend trying to start it outdoors.

Well.. so far what is indoors hasn't shown any signs of colonization. In addition to what is being incubated indoors and the stuff i threw outside, I put a small peice of the old casing in some honey water and i am happy to say that it is showing signs of growth. So, I have two questions for anyone who happens across this thread. First, is there any way to check the progress of what is going on outside without disturbing what could possibly be growing? Second, is there a way to transfer the mycelium growing in the honey water to a jar for future grain to grain transfers without a syringe?

i wouldn't mess with the outdoor spot at all. when you dig into it to check on it's progress you wound the mycelium, causing it to have to heal before it continues to the stage you want, fruiting. a outsoor patch will not fruit until conditions are right, the condition you try to acheive when cultivating indoors, therefore you should just walk around it to see if you got pins. other than that let the outdoor patch do it's thing and it will suprise you when least expected.
