Portabella Grow Log Pic * 1
    #18730509 - 08/20/13 12:07 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Here's what I did

2 quarts of grain where inoculated on 6/20. 1 jar was used for grain to grain transfers with 7 other jars on 7/16. On 8/5 I had a total of 8 grain jars.

On 8/5 I pasteurized approximately six gallons of substrate of the following mix:
8 parts H-poo
1/2 part Gypsum
2 parts Vermiculite

This was put into a monotub(Ohmatic style, nothing fancy), and the grains mixed in after cooling. I have never heard of anyone using a monotub for portabella but I've also never heard that it was a problem to do so... I then covered the holes in the tub with some duct tape for colonization, and cue the waiting...

Two weeks later, to the day I might add, and I have pins! DIDN'T EVEN ADD A CASING LAYER.... I've always been told a casing layer was absolutely necessary for portabella growth.

I admit they don't look like any kind of agaricus growth I've seen(which is technically none, just pics). The substrate was definitely pasteurized correctly, so I can't imagine it would be anything else. My only thought was that I only noticed the pins today, with the holes covered in duct tape perhaps the high CO2 level is to blame? That, or the lack of a casing layer.

I'll try to add an update at least every other day.

I had that same thought at first, but it just seemed so unlikely that I gave it the benefit of the doubt. It was certainly pasteurized, if not over pasteurized.

In any case I'm growing it out, maybe I can identify what it really is.

Coprinoid for sure. Maybe Leucoagaricus.

I have had that happen to me before in pasteurized compost.  Those damned Coprinoids are tenacious buggers.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I already have some casing mix made up so I think I'm going to case it and see what happens. I'd be happy to get anything. I've been having lots of fun with agar recently, maybe I can clone it and save myself the $20 for a new syringe.

You will only get the coprinoid mushroom to fruit I fear.

That is sign of high NH3 in the compost.. portabella compost needs composting and not just pasteurization.. making compost is a 20 days procedure...

Eh, this is a long term hobby. Try again(at least the cubes and oysters have been going well). If anything useful does happen, I'll post. Otherwise I'm letting this one die.

Have you searched for agaricus bisporus grow logs?  Portabella, cremini, white button, it's all the same species.  Jeff just did one over on myco-tek.  I think there's some here too, although I agree, not many...

basically from what I've read after reading this thread and additional research that it is too much hn3(ammonia) so im trying to flush my growing bin with water, i added a bit of wood ash put more holes for drainage and put holes threw the growing material. took off my tent and i think its improving... .
