Welcome to flavor country trippinballs420! Red Rocks is truly a magical place to see any show. Bands love playing there just as much as people love going there to see bands play.

I saw String Cheese Incident there back in 2007 for their supposed last 4 shows as a band. It was bitter sweet as the scene at that time was pretty, uhh, high.. and the band was experiencing creative differences. The shows were absolutely awesome and because nobody knew if the band would ever get back together again at that point in time there was an extra special buzz in the air that built each night until the final night.

Back tracking a little bit though, I hadn't heard that the band was calling it quits until a buddy told me their last 4 shows were going to be at red rocks. I flipped out and ran off to grab tickets only to find out that they were completely sold out. I didn't have internet at the time at my place so I spent the next few days at the library computer finding tickets on craigslist. Back then craigslist was way more legit and wasn't full of ticket brokers and scam artists taking advantage of sold out shows. I sourced tickets from 4 different people and the last one I went out to meet with was a girl with a sweet voice. She just sounded pretty you know?

So I drove about 45 minutes to meet with her, and we just sort of agreed on an exit off the highway and who ever got there first would call the other at a gas station or whatever. I got there first and told her where I was and what I was driving and all that. I remember sitting there waiting and listening to some music and then I looked up to my side mirror and saw the finest body walking straight towards me. I quickly sat up and opened my door and turned around and our eyes met. I melted and we smiled, absolutely gorgeous. I chatted with her a bit and asked her why she was selling her ticket and she said she was going the other nights but had family obligations the one night. Anyways, we made our exchange and I said, "hope to see you at the show!" She said "me too!" and we parted ways. I get back in my car and realize how dumb I was to not ask for her number or see if she wanted to hang at one of the shows.

Ok now back to the shows.. After 3 awesome nights of cheese at red rocks I'm a little bit fried. Cannabis Brownies, Molly, Beer, Whiskey, sass wafers, and mushrooms have taken a toll on me and I'm sitting on a fence near the ramp entrance waiting for my friends to make the walk from the parking lot. All of a sudden I see two girls walk by and one of them has a a look on her face like "Hey, I know that guy" and points me out to her friend. I hop off the fence and we start chatting and talking about how fun the weekend has been. My friends make there way up to us and we introduce everyone to each other. The seed had been planted though. We can't take our eyes off eachother, we go in and all chill together for the 'last string cheese show ever'.

Once we found a good spot and were enjoying the show for a while, she pulls out a roll and offers to split it with me (orange dolphin? something like that). I oblige and it was one of the best rolls I've ever had. We feel great, and I'm not sweating badly, or getting weird and jaw clenched or anything like that, super comfortable and relaxed and were both groovin. Set Break comes around and our friends leave us to chat and we have incredible conversation and bond over some common experiences from our pasts. We cuddle up to eachother and chill and soak in the vibes. I find out that she is only visiting family for the summer and is leaving in a few weeks. I remember being bummed about that but considering the circumstances of our surroundings the damper in mood was a fleeting moment at best.

String Cheese finished up the night with a Texas encore and I remember how deflated the energy in the air felt as soon as they took their final bow. We walked out of the venue and got to a fork in the road. Her and her friend had to go to their lot, and we to ours. I remember wanting to get her number to hang (again! geez i'm lame) but felt conflicted about the whole her leaving in a few weeks thing. We hugged and I said something ultra lame like "Have a great life!" She smiled and gave me a little laugh and then they walked away.

I kind of beat myself up the next day about not going for it and asking her to chill before she went home. A light bulb went on in my head though and I realized I could email her! I get to a computer to write her an email only to find that she has all ready emailed me!

****meltttttttttttttttttttttt*******

To wrap it up, we spent the next few weeks together and had a lot of fun . She went back to school and we chatted over the phone a few times but she moved on after a few months and found someone else. It was kind of a romantic notion that we could somehow work it out but I was mature enough to know that it wouldn't work out. One of the best 3 weeks of my life though.

Gotta love red rocks =)

edit: After reading this through I forgot to make it clear that the girl I hooked up with at the show was the same girl I bought the tickets from..

I don't think I've ever actually listened to String Cheese Incident before. But I keep hearing mention of them everywhere. My cousin's bf said all his friends go to their shows and then on Shroomery they're the talk every once in a while.

Guess I'll have to give them a listen

I like their music OK and their scene seems pretty chill. I tried to get into them for a while back in the early 2000's when Phish was on hiatus. Both shows I went to, I ended up falling asleep. Like I said, I enjoy their music, but I guess it just doesn't really turn my crank.

I'm sure there was excessive amounts of marijuana and some beers involved, but still... I never been CLOSE to falling asleep at a Phish show.

Haha, because of my age I didn't quite catch on to how awesome phish was until after coventry. I had heard recordings and thought it was groovy but didn't ever have a chance to see them before they called it quits. So my entrance into the big world of jam/grass was string cheese incident. First time I saw them was 2004 and then unfortunately didn't end up getting a chance to see them again until those 2007 shows.

Phish definitely blows SCI out of the water these days, but back then I didn't know any better. Still love string cheese and saw some awesome shows in 2011 but they just aren't able to take me to nearly the same place that phish consistently can.

I never understood why people got so into the phish, I saw them once and I enjoyed the show but their music isn't my cup of tee.  The vocals/lyrics are also horrible.

While I wouldn't consider their lyrics "horrible", they definitely are not accessible to the average concert goer or someone who searches for meaningful messages embedded within the lyrics of the songs.

Don't get me wrong, their certainly are songs with meaning, but a lot of it is like a fantasy land story where anything goes and it's all fun and games with hidden twists, turns, and excitement.

Another way to think of it... Have you ever had a trip where you're with a bunch of friends and someone says a funny word? Could be anything.. Like.. Marbles! and its usually not funny at all but the circumstances cause everyone to flip out and laugh their heads off? Or have you ever made up words while tripping?

A lot of phish lyrics are just sentences that sound really quirky or awesome.. For instance:

Quote:

The telephone was ringing, that's when I handed it to Liz
She said, "This isn't who it would be if it wasn't who it is"

or

Quote:

And mindful of his larval craze
The rhinotropic micro-gaze
Ignored it and to my amazement
Rode to Paris in twelve days

This is the work of the guelah papyrus
Stranded for a moment on the ocean of Osyrus
Absorbing all she can for every member of her clan
Expanding exponentially like some recursive virus

I like rrx.  I prefer the fillmore though.  The security to get into red rocks can be WAY overly thorough.  They searched me for so fucking long for the biscuits show.  The driving situation makes it generally a less wilder crowd.  Tailgating is fun though.  Rain can be problematic.  Dunno, it's cool.  I guess because the fillmore is 5 blocks from me it is my first love.   Just dunno brooo.  Seeing sector 9 there in like 3 weeks.

Yeah buddy thats a picture from a  grateful dead show back in the 80s. The new stage is nearly as tall as the scaffolding that's holding up the speakers in that picture. It's cool to see the shear amount of gear that the dead would bring on stage with them for every show. Love those classic pics

This.  I would really like to be into Phish, but I just can't do it.  The lyrics annoy me so much!  It strikes me as just being weird for the sake of being weird.

This isn't a SCI vs. Phish thread, but I really encourage people to check out SCI, especially if you we're only lukewarm to them in the past.  People go on and on about the good old days, but I think they're playing better than ever.  It's not quite as psychedelic as Phish, for instance, but jammy and such positive energy - that's maybe what I like best.

I too also ate too much acid at a red rox show. It was fourth of July weekend and lotus was playing their first show ever on the rox. That's when I discovered the only drawback of red rox, if you are halfway up the stands you are dangerously far from water.

I had been ragin lot all afternoon, I was pretty drunk and had been indulging in some FIRE Molly. We stand in line for like an hour to get in and during that hour I end up doing about four more points of Molly. About ten-fifteen minutes before I hit security I eat all my L. Now I had not initially intended to eat all my L but the Molly had me goin and I felt so good I figured "why not?". Well this was some of the best acid I've eve had. And I munched 7 or 8 hits. By the time we find our seats in the stands I'm already starting to trip HARD. I sit down and my friends were all looking at me like they were concerned and they probably should have been.

Now I'm sweatig so bad at this point and all the beer and whiskey is dehydrating the hell out of me. So I take my bladder and head to the top to hit the bathrooms to fill it. The trek up the stairs ended up being too much for me and I whited out and had to sit down. In the middle of the stairs that are off to the sides. Now if you can imagine, here I am this space cadet spunyun sitting where people are trying to walk, I'm looking in ROUGH shape, pale as hell, and here comes this woman in a hippy dress with a beautiful aura around her walking toward me. She kneels down beside me and gives me a hug, calms me down and asks me what's wrong.

At this point I can't form sentences. All I manage to say to this wonderful soul is "water". She smiles big at me and takes my bladder from me and walks off. I sit there for a few minutes which felt like hours, watching the monoliths dance in the sun. And he she comes with my bladder, she hands it to me and I'm SO happy! She helps me up and takes me back to my friends and off she goes.

Not only are the shows at red rox AWESOME, the crowds are almost always full of people like that. That woman probably saved me from a heat stroke that day and I am forever Grateful!

There's decades of love and energy in those monoliths, that's why the rox are so magical. Peace and love y'all
