Wouldn't it be possible for the recipients of the letter to send a cease and desist order to the sender if they knew who she was? Cowardice is no excuse for harassment and I was under the impression even American law had provisions for this type of verbal abuse.

Maybe in Canada, but in the U.S., only a judge can issue an order...and it takes more than a rude letter to get a restraining order.
I suspect you're talking about a "cease and desist letter" which is just a demand that someone stop something. It has no legal authority in and of itself unless there is some particular statute that grants the authority. The only statute of that nature that comes to mind at the moment is the FDCPA which allows a person to send a cease communication letter to collection agencies which then triggers liability if the collection agency continues to communicate...
There are no valid laws in the United States that generally require people to be polite to one another.

Canadians have zero concept of freedom of speech, and I'm thankful that I don't live there.
Hate speech, my friend.
Incitement of hatred or advocation of genocide against an identifiable group (any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation) are proscribed over here, because there is a general understanding that such extreme speech has no useful place in a civil society. Disability is not currently included, but may be implemented after this case.
There is no such thing as freedom of speech--there are reasonable limitations found in every country--even the USA.
I for one see more value in providing an environment free of hate speech, than in guaranteeing freedom of speech unconditionally--it's a lot more peaceful without folks like the Westboro Babtist Church.

That letter isn't promoting genocide, though it certainly is a form of harassment.

That's why I said incitement of hatred or promotion of genocide. Only one condition is required, with promotion of genocide carrying the heavier penalty.

Hate speech is protected by the constitution, as it should be. The remedy for such speech is more speech, not censorship. Trading my freedom of speech for a little bit of protection against being offended isn't even a close call in my book.

They don't "trump" anything, but yes...I think intellectual property law is a very important part of respecting the rights of inventors and artists in addition to keeping the nation competitive.
No right is absolute, of course, and I've never claimed as much.
