Should I keep my rather open jar in the dark to prevent early fruiting?
    #18727973 - 08/19/13 02:43 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

My first attempt at cultivation all went a bit pear-shaped, since the plastic lids of my jars warped and cracked in the heat of the sterilization process. In the hope that the insulating layer of dry vermiculite will protect the substrate from contamination I soldiered on.

After doing my best to make my glove-box (with attached gloves so should be almost perfectly airtight)and its contents as sterile as possible, I proceeded to remove the damaged lids and inoculate the jars. The lids were then placed back on top of the jars and the jars have been left in the glove-box to limit exposure to any bacteria. I'm surprised to see just a few days later that there is mycelium growth around the jars

My question is this... Since the jars are in effect open inside the glove-box, and therefore have access to a lot more oxygen then they would have had they remained sealed, should I keep them in the dark to prevent them from trying to fruit early?

BTW I'm using PF TEK with P.Cubensis (Mezapatec & Ecuador)

The mushrooms will not fruit till they have fully colonized the substrate....usualy unless there is a factor such as drought like conditions or contamination.  You should be fine just let the mycelium do there thing .  Is this a bulk inoculation or cake because if it's cake you have a long way to go till 100%+1 week.

Cheers for that! ... I'm using cakes, slightly smaller than 1/2pint. I expect it'll be another month as one of the strains hasn't even started to show any signs yet at all. One of the jars has white stuff  (hopefully mycelium)growing on top of the ,probably not so dry, verm layer on top.. Is that common?

sometimes but usually only after full colinization.  However if there were a large amount of spores present towards the top of the jar they would take over that area faster.

Light on a 12/12 timer through the whole process (indirect for colonization and direct for fruiting) helps develop a circadian rhythm. Also ditch the gloves and go with a SAB (still air box) GB's aren't well suited for this hobby. You can only sanitize it you will never be able to sterilize it; this takes high heat which would melt the plastic. The goal here isn't sterility, it is still air. The gloves cause problems with this because moving your hands causes a suction which creates air currents within the box. Also you can't flame sterilize your utencils in the box because the heat creates air currents and with the gloves there is no way to flame your utencils on the outside and then place them inside because the gloves are in the way. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help! Will go the SAB route the next time round. I'm keeping them in my spare room which gets approximately 12 hours indirect daylight during the day, but will switch to direct lamp light for fruiting if that's recommended.

I've also noticed 1 out of the 15 jars in the glove box has developed green mold. The air in the GB should be perfectly still since the gloves aren't being used and the lid is taped to the box with masking tape. Since the jars don't have lids that completely cover the substrate, do you think the mold could travel from one jar to another? I'm thinking there'd be more chance of contamination if i actually opened the BOX to remove the jar, than if I just leave it there, but would appreciate and pointers.

Thanks again and sorry for all the questions
