What makes coir so contam resistant?
    #18727330 - 08/19/13 12:17 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

What is it that's so contam resistant about coir? As well as what makes straw so contam prone? Is it nutritional content, ph, etc.

I always assumed it was what was because of what is already contained within the straw that made it so prone to contam. When straw is cut it is left in the field to dry in the sun for a couple days. Then it is baled and stored. There is no way it is completely dry when it is baled and stored and so I am sure it sits and grows all kinds of nasties. I am not sure of the commercial coir prep but I am sure it is more refined than that of straw. Just a guess though

Well even after pasteurization, straw will grow nasties before coir in most instances.

Well you aren't killing everything when you pasteurize and there is a lot more there to kill in the straw

But if pasteurization kills or knocks back trich spores, I still believe straw will grow trich before coir. And on this basis (I could be wrong) is what I'm basing my original question on. After killing off the bad stuff in any substrate, why does one grow funk faster than another?

If its got to do with what's not killed off, are we to assume there's just an overloaded spores load in straw?

Yes exactly. An overload of spores in straw. That is the assumption I was making

Or simply that straw is more nutritious, at least to those bad things, and thus they grow faster on it.
