Buying a new laptop, overwhelmed by choices
    #18726692 - 08/19/13 09:29 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Maybe you guys can point me in the right direction, I need to get a new laptop (use mostly for surfing the web, watching videos, importing music, using photoshop and possibly video software). I don't even know where to begin with picking one, I feel like I'm going to end up making a complete shot in the dark. I'm probably going to buy online, btw.

What is your budget and will you use it on the go or mostly at home? How important is a high screen resolution to you?

Good questions, as primarily a mac user I don't pay much attention to the PC laptop spectrum, but occasionally have noticed some of the new ultraportables around town... The Acer Aspire S7 looks very sweet as well as the Samsung Series 9... Paired up with an external monitor for occasional photoshop editing would be a pretty nice set up....

i don't want to spend anymore than 1k, would prefer to stay in the 6-800 range. i haven't thought much about screen resolution, since i know little about it. what i have now is fine as far as that goes..i watch a lot of netflix and would be photo editing so it needs to be GOOD but not optimal.

Any good moderately priced lap top should do ya good, if using it on the go though you have to look at battery life "IE buy an extra Battery" and a 15 inch should do ya as far as clarity. a 17 inch
or larger is a bit cumbersome. All I Use anymore is a 10 inch screen netbook. And stay away from HPs they are notorious for overheating and killing MoBos as they come from the factory. Look around at what is available and find out what all the specs mean not just memory and hd capcity, but the actual physical components.

As for laptop brands, I would go with either Toshiba or Lenovo personally (Lenovo being more expensive), neither have ever done me wrong with laptops and they tend to use higher quality components and have a higher build quality then the others. (Last a long ass time). Stay far away from HP/Gateway/Dell. Samsung/Sony/Acer are pretty acceptable. But Toshiba/Lenovo would be my top picks.

Really unless you need some extra special feature, just about any laptop in your price range should do you.
If you are going to be doing some photoshop and maybe some video software, you want something with at least a moderately good GPU.

For example this little thing will beastmode just about any laptop in that price range - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312835

But that may be a bit over your price range, some other options I would look at: (In order of best to least)

What do you have now? I ask because the screen is just about the most important differentiator between laptops and photo editing on a low-res screen really sucks.

That would be ideal, yeah. It'll also bring her to the maximum of her budget. But I'd still do it.

If she can afford it, I think that top one I linked would be a really good option, 1920x1080, i7 4700, 12GB RAM, 1TB HDD and 8GB SSD (could upgrade..), 2x 750M in SLI, don't think you can do much better than that for ~1k

You can get an hd 4000 1080p sony vaio for like $650 on newegg, I couldn't find any haswells though, which would be much better igpu performance and battery life. FWIW, I think 1600x900 would be quasi acceptable at 15" for desktop replacement.

And the other 2. Only the first Lenovo you linked to is full hd. It's also >$1k. Still, I'd also recommend Lenovo - although things have definitely changed (for the worse) since they took over from IBM. It's the little things, such as logo stickers peeling off after just a few weeks. Not a particularly good sign, although from a technical perspective, it might mean nothing.

I like the y500 idea though, lenovo is having a back to school sale

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y500/ $900 gets you an i7 ivy/single 750m  or i5 ivy dual 750m

and a 4th gen single 750m for $969
