Please can someone help me out with this? I was thinking maybe pan olives but i didnt think they grew in wood chips? Cheers
Habitat: Found on wood chips in a public park in Newcastle Upon Tyne
Gills: Dark, attached
Stem: long, thin, fragile, some have tiny pinheads coming from the base.
Cap: 1-4 cm, pale white/grey, brown on younger specimens and bright orange on pins, rubbery, conical.
Spore print color: Jet black.
Bruising: None, possibly brown but hard to tell.
Other information: Found panaeolus mushrooms nearby, so perhaps a member of this family?

There are a few rare Panaeolus species described as growing from wood like the Australian Panaeolus bernicii and Panaeolus fimbriatus, but I'm not very familiar with them so maybe they belong in another genus.

Dammit, I was starting to think possibly they could be panaeolus azurescens due to some blue bruising I'm now starting to notice, also they're crawling with little black springtails if thats any indication? Also, are psathyrella sp. poisonous/active or what? I cant seem to get a decent answer on the internet and I've not yet encountered them, cheers.

I think you mean Psilocybe azurescens but it's certainly not that. You are unlikely to find those in the UK (unless cultivated) as they're native to the Pacific North-West of America.
These aren't blueing. They're a Psathyrella species and are not active nor toxic (but not worth eating).

Panaeolus cyanescens is a tropical/subtropical species that grows from dung.
Psilocybe cyanescens grows in the UK. You should be hunting them or Psilocybe semilanceata.

Really? Oh I'd heard that they do grow here, and we have had weird warm but wet weather recently which I thought might be a factor, but yeah the fact they were on wood confused me, and I was actually on my way to look for libs when I happened upon these guys ahah! I'll take your word for it mate, but I must say I'm disappointed, gathered a whole bag of these thinking they were pan cyans :-(

Panaeolus cinctulus will grow from wood chips.

Was that growing directly from the wood or the soil under the chips?

Not sure. It is a mulched tree box in Washington DC. I don't see how the soil would have been fertilized by anything other than the rats that get bigger than cats around here. Maybe the type of mulch has some fertilizer in it? Some of the mulch they place around the tree beds has a manure smell to it for a day or two after they place it. Possible?

Pans often grow from rich soil but very rarely from wood, so that's probably what they where growing from. It takes some specialised enzymes to break down wood and I wouldn't expect a dung/soil lover to have them.

I agree with you on the cincts. The fertilizer probably leaches into the soil from the mulch. If I ever find them again, I'll take a closer look.
As far as the above statement. Cubes have been known to grow from wood.
I think cubes are the exception to the rule though.

Maybe in a mixed medium (where the wood is incidental) or very decomposed wood, but they would struggle to grow directly from fresh wood.
