Any ideas about this strange black spot?
    #18725762 - 08/19/13 01:48 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Woke up to check out some BRF jars and I've come across this weird black spot. Strange as it is not near any inoculation point (mycelium growing healthily around most the cake). I don't see how it would of got there if it is contam! Anyone ID it as contam? Other 5 jars in the batch look fine. Last round lost 5/6 jars to wet spot but never had any contam previously :uhoh::sad:

That is contaminated.

Sterilize it, then toss the contents and wash it out with soapy water.

You pressure cook your moldy jars?

When I tried that, my whole house stunk of mold. How do you avoid this?

Trust me it's not  must just be the photo. I'm a little colour blind but the rest is definitely non discoloured BRF mix / healthy myc

according to RR, the sterilization process does not actually sterilize the brf, grains, etc.  It just knocks the comtam spores into a kind of coma to use an analogy.  They can and do wake up from the coma given enough time.  It usually takes a week or two.  So it's good for the myc to colonize as fast as possible to keep the contams from waking up and getting a foothold.

Actual sterilization would make the grains turn into a puddle of ooze because it would take 24 hours of cooking or something like that.

Is it just me or does it look like there's too much moisture in that jar?

Didn't know this. I assumed any unwanted organisms were dead through sterilization. Did not think they were just having a nap  although did obviously realise that they are still in the jars as dead organisms as opposed to sterilization somehow teleporting them out of yr mix :slomo:

well then I'd rather just open them without pressure cooking and scrape the moldy grains out.

I understand it would be better to kill everything in the jar first so as not to spread fuck tons of mold spores. But it just smells so nasty...

And I think it was Citric that said that he's found jars he forgot about for a year or so, never inoculated and which never grew mold.  The jury's still out on this one for me.
