Monotropa uniflora - The ghost plant\ indian pipe
    #18725082 - 08/18/13 10:10 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

For anyone that is interested in weird mushrooms.
I was out cruising the forest and found this rarity, a plant fungi.
Ive seen these before but on rare occasions.

Caption below is copy and pasted from wikipedia.. Interesting that it gets its energy from photosynthetic trees.

"Unlike most plants, it is white and does not contain chlorophyll. Instead of generating energy from sunlight, it is parasitic, more specifically a myco-heterotroph. Its hosts are certain fungi that are mycorrhizal with trees, meaning it ultimately gets its energy from photosynthetic trees. Since it is not dependent on sunlight to grow, it can grow in very dark environments as in the understory of dense forest. It is often associated with beech trees.[2] The complex relationship that allows this plant to grow also makes propagation difficult."

Wow!  They look like a perverted narcissus.  Excellent find!

What part of the world is this?

They must be in season.
What is the purpose of the center of the fungi flower? I thought of two things.. 1 the butt hole looking hole releases its spore load. or 2 it absorbs something going into it, perhaps small insects or something to eat.

Ha that was my thought after viewing the photos. It looks like a fake flower to lure in something.

Now this i found interesting..
Has anyone consumed this mushroom plant to verify this?

http://livingafield.com/Plants_Monotropa_uniflora.htm
Miscellaneous characteristics:

This plant is perhaps one of the best pain relievers known. It is an excellent substitute for the pain relieving effects of opium without the mind altering effects, or the opiate fog. The plant associates with a small range of fungal hosts, all of them members of Russulaceae.

The plant is also said to possess hallucinogenic properties.

Joust, why whats wrong with journal articles?
I found some better sources in regarding this mush. I found its not necessarily hallucinogenic but calming and brings the mind to a more cognitive state. Basically lowers sensory overload to the brain and body.

I would just say look for clinical studies about the species. People claim
many things about many plants that just are not true.

Proof! I need it!

I hear ya. Although its interesting to read this stuff solid evidence\proof is needed.
If your interested, I read this site earlier today. Sounds like this guy has first hand experience with this mush.

Thanks for the link. A bit too hippy dippy for my taste. Kind of the opposite of a clinical trial.

Talking about feelings and the like. Not good science.

Just so ya know, it is a plant and not a fungus.

Here is one from last week, Nevado de Toluca, Mexico, Mexico.

Does anyone think that the Mexican varieties have more pink color?  Or is the pink tint seen in the US as well?

The flower part is just that, a flower.  M. uniflora is a flowering plant, and reproduces through seeds.

Its more like a pseudo plant because it doesn't use photosynthesis, rather it vampires its energy from mycelia.  It almost seems like a plant\fungus hybrid.
But it guess its still classified as a plant.
