sweet arent those edible? I didnt want to pick it. now I do lol. Im starting to be more considerate and not take anything I dont plan to eat unless for ID purposes. when I do take them I try to remember my knife and cut them to where I leave the mycelium in a state it can grow back.

Yeah i don't like taking stuff unless I'm sure It's something I'm going to be eating, or i know what it is and am going to be eating it. If it is indeed a Giant Puffball then it is very edible. I've yet to find one myself though but really want to. Only edible when all-white inside however. Don't rely on my ID though, as like i said, I've never found that particular species before.

I gotcha mayn! Im finding tons of different shrooms and at first I was murdering all I found. then I decided to take them all back and drop them near where I found them on deer trails. I hope you find one someday! I always heard of them but this is my first find. I read some about it after you said that might be what it is. I found little puffballs often. I think Ill just el this one grow if I dont get a 100% ID which I dont know how I could get anyway without sending it to someone. Thanx for the fast reply too.

This is cool stuff here: Giant puffball mushrooms are said to be some of the most tasty and fun to cook mushrooms found in the woods. In the Northeast, they commonly grow in the early fall (August — September) on the edge of forests, in open woods, grassy fields, parks and meadows. It is not unusual to find them growing in fairy rings or as single specimens.
A mushroom can easily be identified as a giant puffball by its giant size, shallow craters, misshapen spherical shape, lack of a stipe (stem), bright smooth white skin with irregular cracks at maturity. But caution must be taken because it can easily be mistaken for volleyballs or soccer balls that have been left in fields or lost in the woods.
The largest ever recorded giant puffball was eight feet, eight inches in diameter and weighed forty-eight pounds4. While mine wasn’t that big it was still huge–as you can see from the picture. It was calculated that a single ten-inch giant puffball has as many as 7 trillion (7,000,000,000,000) spores. If each of those spores grew and yielded a ten-inch puffball, the combined puffball mass would be 800 times that of the earth.
The flesh of a puffball is called the gleba, and when immature (and edible) it is pure white and has the texture of marshmallow. Once mature the gleba’s color changes to yellow and brown and it should not be eaten at this stage because of its poor taste and possible toxicity. In addition to a change in color the gleba becomes powdery at maturity due to the spores and capillitium (sterile threads that hold the spores).
Some simple rules must be followed before eating giant or any puffballs.
Cut all puffballs in half in order to be certain that there is no sign of gills. If gills are present it is not a puffball but instead the “button stage” of a gilled mushroom. The interior tissue must be uniformly white. If it is yellowish or brown this means it is approaching maturity and might have an off-flavor or possibly be toxic. If the mushroom is infested with insects/maggots it should be severely trimmed in order to avoid the infested parts. The outside skin is easily peeled and should not be eaten if it is tough, leathery, or dirty. Never wash the puffball with water as it will soak up water like a sponge and become very soggy. The puffball can be stored for 2-5 days in the refrigerator without losing significant quality. I turned to a book on my shelf I had never used before to figure out what to do with this monster of a mushroom. A Cook on the Wild Side: The Indispensable guide to Collecting and Cooking Wild Food by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is a great resource for recipes and “how to” for foraged and wild ingredients. It covers everything from mushrooms and nuts to fish and game.
Puffball Fritters From: A Cook on the Wild Side1
4 slices of pancetta olive oil for frying 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 4 whole eggs 4 large slices from a puffball, about 1cm thick 2 eggs, beaten salt and freshly ground black pepper 125g breadcrumbs
Chop the pancetta into thick matchsticks, and fry in a little olive oil until crispy. Toss in the chopped garlic and fry until it starts to take color. Remove the garlicky pancetta from the pan and reserve. Bring 4 whole eggs to a boil in a small pan of cold water and boil them for just 4 minutes. Dip the puffball slices in the beaten egg, which has been seasoned, and coat well in the breadcrumbs. Fry in the same oil left from the frying pancetta, turning once until crispy and golden brown. Drain each puffball slice quickly on a paper towel and place on warmed plates. Peel the soft-boiled eggs carefully and cut them in half. Place 2 halves, yolk upwards, on each fritter and season with salt and black pepper. Sprinkle over the garlicky pancetta.

I always just use a bit of butter to saute up a new shroom. You can get the full flavor and texture and then decide what else might pair well with it.
That one looks PRIME. Nevermind that some other critters thought so too. Trim off the bad bits with a sharp not serrated knife, take a slice and dice it up and throw it in the skillet.
Then report back! I hear these are fantastic but have never found one.

Yeh, don't wait too long, shrooms don't keep. Well, some boletes not too old keep rather well, but they're an exception. Maybe you can report back on this one and how it fares... Looks solid enough.
I try to eat or get drying what I've taken that day. Even if you're only holding overnight you must frig or leave outside if it's moist & chilly. Don't shut 'em up in a plastic bag, tho' you can get away with tupperware for a little bit. They need to breathe or they go fast. A day can take it from prime to slime. ;-)
Be a shame to waste any of that.

to fryday: I like how you warned me of the bugs. I started chopping it into cubes (with a non seraded knife) and potato bugs everywhere! I took it outside and cut the bad off of it. wiped the rest sparingly with a damp cloth and finished cubing it. I then decided no time like the present. I like your idea of sauteing it in butter to taste more of its flavor. I decided to go with a different method. i warmed some canola oil up and added some minced garlic and the cut pieces of the puffball. They smell soooo good. but might just be cause I like garlic lol. I am drying the rest in the oven on low with door cracked. Gonna make some giant puffball powder to add to soups etc just read about this method. reminds me of marshmallows the texture while handling.

I like the taste and it reminds me of the fair for some reason. like funnel cakes. It has a marshmallow texture. quite good. Id eat it again providing Im healthier for it.

Looks like you cooked 'em purty crispy. It's probably worth it to sample 'em at various cooking times, though I tend to cook mine thoroughly but not crispy. I figure they're done when they've given up their moisture, further cooking just dries 'em out and burns the butter.
Got a bud who chops his chanties really fine and then sautes them in butter for like an hour. They're like cardboard, I don't see the point. ;-)
You've come a long way in a week.
XLNT!

Yeah may have cooked them too crispy. I always was told by grandma if you wonder if somethings safe to eat smell it, if it smells good, cook it then try a little bit and wait a while. Now Im a little wary since there are many poisonous mushies that survivors claim were really tasty! Yeah I feel Ive gone a long way too TY I have unlimited energy when hypomanic and I packed a months worth of hunting into a week lol. This forum is great Im working on rating members. Hey, thass cool, got some shrooms under my handle. ;-)
I didn't think it would happen to me.
Yeh, you should probably get the "fastest up to speed" trophy. Helps that you're on an atv - think of how long it would have taken you on foot. I wish I had one here to get out on the dunes, I hear crazy tales of matsi in the sand. But I think I've got it figured out, just need some rain and a nice temp drop, that'll happen soon enough. I can't believe I can't wait for the rain and chill. Not my usual MO and way too much to get done before the wet, spendin' all my time on the shroomery isn't getting that motorhome resealed.

haha I understand how work comes first. I often take impulsive action and put off the work for another day . Only because I can. I really love my atv. if I had to walk it which Ive done for years before owning a atv I would have still found somethings but most of it would get throwed out so I dont have to carry it. on the atv the pocket let me carry all I need, makes it sweetr TY for the compliment I try

Man, I want to find something delicious. There are some pretty cool mushrooms around here, but I haven't yet found anything I could eat for dinner in decent quantity. Except once...I found an assload of B. edulis that had already turned.
It feels good to find one outside and eat it, doesn't it?
Edit: Sorry...the "North American" B. edulis...

Completely inaccurate however. There is no way of knowing from smell or taste if something is safe to eat or not. And I'm sure lots of people have been poisoned this way.
