Apocalypse Now
Raging Bull

I came here to say that there had to be at least one Kubrick film on there.
2001 A space odyssey was SO ahead of it's time visually and fx wise, but I can't help but feel like I'd rather see A Clockwork Orange there instead.

Serenity and Tron Legacy is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.

Nah 2001>Clockwork any day IMO
2001 isn't even a movie, it's a fucking experience, you don't watch 2001, you are in 2001. A+++ as far as plot goes, A++++ Visually speaking, still stands up to this day.
But yeah Kubrick is King

It's a tough decision, for sure, but for me I think A Clockwork Orange wins out on personal preference. Still... you're right though 2001 is a fucking experience.
There was an art collective near me that did a screening of it with the score performed by a live pit. It was ahhhhmazing as all hell holy mother of god.
Also, BEING JOHN MALCOVICH. If you have not yet seen that I highly recommend checking it out on netflix. Such an imaginative and intelligent movie .
...also...also maybe for my personal list, The Goonies...or maybe The Neverending Story...

In no particular order. I honestly might change a few if I had the time, so these aren't really my best 10 but just 10 of my favorites.
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Kill Bill Episode 1 - Pulp Fiction, although a great movie, is a bit overrated and I honestly preferred Kill Bill The Hangover - It was funny, but it's funnier when you're drunk. Terminator - This, The Matrix and Die Hard aren't exactly 10/10 movies but they're fun and kinda classics in a way Die Hard The Matrix Heat - (1995) Good heist movie Three Kings - C'mon, you get George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube on the same screen in a great war movie. Shaun of The Dead - Hilarious! The Machinist - Great psychological thriller. It'll draw you right in.

For sure they are definitely both incredible films!
Oh my god.....I am so incredibly jealous. A live pit...Jesus Christ! I've been dreaming of just getting a chance to see it in a Theater. Damn I bet that was crazy.
Somebody recommended that movie to me the other day, looks pretty interesting, definitely going to give it a watch eventually.
Goonies is good Neverending Story terrified me as a child for some reason, I haven't watched it since I was like 7

You almost gave me a heart attack. I'll be honest I've never really been a fan of Citizen Kane, I mean I see how it was a revolutionary film for its time and all, but god damn is it a snore fest for me.
A little side note. I find it really funny how Justin Lin (director of the Fast and the Furious Movies) went to like 3 different film schools and has a bunch of film degrees, and then you have directors like kubrick and tarantino who barely finished High School

A scanner darkly was a pretty good film, I watched that one a bunch when it was newer. I wouldn't consider it top 10 but somewhere in the top 50.
I thought napoleon dynamite was dumb. I guess it's supposed to be, that's why people find it funny, I just thought it was annoying and slow. Not my kind of movie.

oh yeah, i've probably watched fear and loathing more than i've watched hitchikers guide to the galaxy (which also goes on my top list) anyone who enjoyed fear and loathing should check out where the buffalo roam. bill murray plays a better HST than johnny depp.
i saw we're the millers last night, it's not top 10 material, but it had me laughing more than most comedies recently. the most recent hangover was funny too. i know im lame though...

Murray does a better Thompson, but Depp does better Raoul Duke. I guess that's sorta the point though.
The guy who played Acosta in Buffalo can't even compete with Del toro though, Del toro was born to play that role. Where the buffalo roam was great though

Oh, I'd probably put the original Wicker Man film on my top 10.

Altered States is another good older film.
I really should watch Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, because I feel like it'd be right up my alley...all this time I've been avoiding it because I thought Nicholas Cage(who's face I cannot stand to gaze upon in any capacity) was in it..turns out he's not!
I liked Fear and Loathing but I feel like it did a terrible terrible job about explaining what exactly was going on to people who weren't familiar with the book or premise. I feel like it could've been sooo much better than it was. The acting was phenomenal and it's still a good film, but not in my top 10 or even 25.

Honestly it is the best they could have done, moving a novel like Fear and Loathing to the big screen was an incredibly difficult undertaking.
Look what they did with The Rum Diary though, they changed things around so much in the movie (to fit a more conventional plot line) that they completely missed the entire point of the book.

To me F&L is an experience. I saw it in theaters but I'll never forget watching it for the first time on mushrooms. True...but I read somewhere that Hunter S. Thompson was not actually in anyway involved in the making of the film(though Johnny Depp consulted him about the role and they became great friends irl). I heard that the rights were given/sold to an ex girlfriend, in actuality? Or something along those lines.
And I love Danny Boyle, he's another one of the directors I wanted to bring up.
Danny Boyle, Guillermo del Toro, Spike Jonze, Sofia Coppola(though I heard she directed The Bling Ring and I have next to no interest in seeing that), are all directors I really like.
Speaking of which...

and don't laugh, but...this one is one of my personal favorites, not gonna lie. Watching the beginning of that film hits me fucking hard, just after having several "close calls" out on roads with horses and witnessing a fatal horseback riding incident myself.

Right on When it comes to art some of the best works don't really have a "point". It's like when you look at a piece of art, and you really like it, but you can't exactly put your finger on why it is you like it. Or when you read a poem and the words bring out some sort of emotional response but you don't know why exactly.

Basketball diaries was greta, I used to listen to Jim Carrols music when I was in highschool so that was pretty cool to see.
Also, fear and loathing was good, but the book was way better. The movie was directed towards drug users and you couldn't tell what was going on. The book made a lot more sense. I read HST hated the movie and was angry about it being made.

I think you're right. I think she's credited as the producer of the film, right? Laila Nabulsi or something like that. I saw an interview with Hunter regarding the film and he was asked whether he liked it or not. He said he did, but said that he disagreed with how he was portrayed at times in the movie. For example he pretty much said he was disturbed at the scene on the restaurant patio where he throws coins on the ground (as a tip) when the midget waiter asked for a tip.

Yeah, something like that. I've gotta say, it must be incredibly difficult to watch a work of art that you created get turned into anything.
I've done a teeny, tiny bit of playwrighting and screenwriting in school and for really shitty amateur theatre and film companies my friends ran, and you kind of just have to accept that when you are doing anything that's collaborative in nature the end product will not look like it does originally, in your head.
And another director I forgot to bring up who sometimes puzzles me..is Woody Allen. I really love some of his stuff, but there's something about his style that I dislike that I can't put my finger on.

I troll Really though Citizen kane Chaplin's modern times The shining(kubrick) Jurassic park 1 Requiem for a dream And the rest will come to me later
I really don't get why citizen kane is such a great movie to me. I had to watch it for a class and we had to write about our favorite movie we watched in the class. I just went with citizen kane and pretty much repeated reasons other critics liked it and slowly started to agree with them. After i wrote that out though for some reason the movie just stuck in my head and i realized if a movie sticks in your head for more than a week it's probably safe to say you like it. I've watched that and modern times at least 3 times since i took the course over a year ago. Buster keaton's the general is also good, but i fall asleep watching it and im to ocd about whether or not i'm watching the one with the original soundtrack to fully enjoy it.
Jesus i feel like a teachers pet just for enjoying all those old ass classic movies so much but fuck it.
And on a side note it's a sad day when you can't find a copy of citizen kane in any wal-mart or video store around.:smh:

Yeah, minus his brief cameo, and tutoring Depp, I don't think he had much of a say. I do recall reading somewhere that he bitched out Gilliam for wanting to do an animated sequence or something during the wave speech. I also remember reading that during the first screening of the movie Thompson would get up and scream random things during certain sequences. Sounds pretty accurate to me
Yup all good directors! The Bling Ring? Is that the one with Emma Watson? I might have to go watch that, only because I think Emma Watson is incredibly attractive
I can't see the first pic.
The Horse Whisperer....hmmmmm I swear I have seen it, I don't remember much about it though. Was it about like some lady who moves onto an Island with a bunch of wild horses? Or am I thinking of something else?

The first pic is Lost in Translation. I love that film, I would also love to spend a couple of months laying around Tokyo, that's like a dream vacation.
And naw, Scarlet Johanson and her friend go out riding their horses on an icy road somewhere in the northeast, tractor trailer loses control. friend and her horse dies, scarlet johanson becomes an amputee and her horse turns into a traumatized vicious scary monster that no one can control. So her mom takes her to see Robert Redford out west and everyone bonds and shit.

Ahh okay, I have not seen it, it does look pretty interesting though. Tokyo does sound pretty great.
Huh I swear I saw a movie called the Horse Whisperer with a completely different plot. That sounds terribly depressing though The beginning anyway.
Speaking of Robert Redford though....

I troll Really though Citizen kane Chaplin's modern times The shining(kubrick) Jurassic park 1 Requiem for a dream And the rest will come to me later
That's funny I had to watch it for a class as well. Bored me half to death, like I said though, I can see how it would be at the top of the list for some people.
Funny story about that same class actually. Later in the year we had a class vote on what movie to watch next. We got to watch all our movies in the preforming arts auditorium on this huge ass screen. The two choices were Star Wars (don't remember which episode) and 2001. Of course everyone in the class wanted to watch star wars (this is high school mind you) so I pretty much get in front of the class and spend like a good half hour trying to convince them to watch Space Odyssey. I lost of course. Fucking sucked, me and my buddy were planning on taking a bit of acid and getting to watch it on the big screen. I'm still pretty butthurt about that.

On a scale of 1-10 how accurate is Trainspotting as far as portraying the lifestyle of a hardcore heroin user? I've always been pretty curious seeing as I've never been around the Heroin scene.
I love this scene...

I have not! I must look into it. I love surrealism in general, in any medium.
I still have been searching for this film I saw a couple years ago that was surrealist-horror. It was a Spanish film about dreams, I don't remember much, just that it was a good film, or at the very least interesting. Drives me nuts.

Thanks, I don't mean to just toss in gang tapes, but Gomorrah by Martin Scorsese/ and City of God are easily interchangeable.
Rock N' Rolla's the Rastafari movie is good too, a feel good movie.
I'm definitely going to go see Sunshine next.

Those early Guy Ritchie Gangster films hold a special place in my heart. They more or less got me into Quentin Tarantino, since their styles are sort of similar, and once I got into Tarantino I started looking at Movies on a whole different level.

There's too many ties, my top 10 list would be 50 different movies. How can you say which was better between Fargo, Pulp Fiction, Usual Suspects, Trainspotting, and Fight Club. They were all great movies, hard to rate that way.

I'd say an 8 it's more accurate than what spun ws to meth addicts. Spun did an awesome job at it but there were a few scenes that were definitely not accurate at all and were just put in there because it's a movie.

It was more recent than both of those(think it came out in the 2000's) - but thanks for the suggestions, most definitely gonna watch those.
I remember there was a pretty lady who's name I can't remember, along with a less pretty lady who was really into this one guy in the movie. I also remember a weird dream scene where the pretty lady was in a hotel and heard a knock at her door and she looked through the peephole and this old bloody lady/creature/thing was there. There was also another dream scene with a very full moon, which I think might've been homage to the film 'Un Chien Andalou' which is one of the first surrealist films ever. It was actually co- directed by Salvador Dali - it's a short silent film and the full thing is right here:
**within the first 30 seconds there's a close up shot of someone getting their eye sliced by a razor, just a warning. It's actually really fascinating how they made the film. I also showed it in my highschool history class...because I was a weirdo...
but yeah, surrealist fans or film fans in general should check it out. It's weird as shit.
