ID. Reishi in my backyard?
    #18723458 - 08/18/13 03:48 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I know there's a few reishi ID posts. Thought it be a cool first post.

Habitat:
Back yard, maybe 6 hours of sun a day, with in 10 ft of a dead maple tree, this soil is the lowest point of land around, always moist.

Gills:
Are visible under white part of cap. Pores

Stem:
Length 1-2 inches, diameter 1", color redish brown with patches of yellow, wood like texture

Cap:
Diameter 1-4", off white in color,, texture is much softer than stem.

Spore print color:
Not able to collect spore sprint, yet. I did manage to clone two onto MEA.  One grew fiercely covering the petri in a few days but turned green. My second is slower but still looks healthy.

Bruising:
Very hard stem,  white part of cap turns a light brown. Very tough altogether, Had trouble cutting through with scalpel.

Smells like a rotten tree but slightly sweet, not unpleasant, mild

Got Reishi growing from a Bradford Pear stump in my front yard.  It has only fruited twice in 3 years, but it looks much like that each time.  I think it's neat how it just engulfs the grass as it develops.
