Apparently some people don't lol.  I don't mind driving however many miles away to drop off unwanted guests that sneak around my domicile.  I refuse to kill anything unless I'm about to eat it or it's about to eat me.  There are a few exceptions to the rule as always.

It's a groundhog aka. Marmota monax which as far as I know aren't found in TX (and don't look like what was posted up as a "groundhog" above), but are common in OPs location.

Dirty, thieving little marmots.  They also carry plague and a PLETHORA of communicable exoparasites. (fleas, lice, ticks, mites)
They are usually covered in their own urine and feces as they have very poor toilet habits (they just go in their burrows)
Just keep that in mind if you decide to touch one.  I have caught many.  I have seen first hand the squirming rabble of tiny bugs that make up the entire surface of their skin like a psychedelic morphing mosaic of multicolored scales and filth.

Filthy filthy members of the squirrel family.  If you ever get the plague in north america. 90% It will be either from a Prairie dog, Ground squirrel, or a marmot.

Ok, The OP is back with an update....

The trap in the original pictures was way too small... So, I went out and got a bigger one
-->

The zippo (with shiny colors) is there for scale. It is kind of big, but the box said it was for woodchucks (groundhogs).

I will be monitoring it via my little deer hunting camera
-->

I have baited it with cantaloupe, which is apparently their favorite. I took some of the juices from the melon and dripped them around the suspected location of the nest/hole. The giant dark thing on the trip plate is a rock. I put it there because I had it already go in today, eat the bait and walk out, so I felt I should make it easier to trigger.

As to the kill it or don't kill it, I will say this. A trap is a nice way to deal with it because it is simply easier, but not necessarily quickly. Shooting it would be an instant solution, but apparently these things have great hearing and amazing eyesight. One website said they could see better than turkeys (turkeys have damn good eyes)

Let me know what ya'll think and any suggestions.

Cheers!
Shoot it or trap it.
You may choose only one
Kill it (and possibly eat it) or let it live
You may choose only one

damn don't you hate that--set that trigger a little lighter and/or put the bait further back in the cage like not on the pan if that's what you did--good luck--I got that same cage BTW and the double door squirrel trap-----I mean like make sure that shaft is even on both sides and kindof offset those two "hands" instead of making them exactly even--know what I mean??

I know what you mean. Right now I have it set at the very tip of hooks holding the gate open. I only attached one, because I think the receipt from the store said it was a coyote trap.  :facepalm3:

Oh well... I moved it so it is perpendicular to the camera so I can get you all better pictures... Only have enough cantaloupe for one -maybe- two days.

Cheers!

Thread stays open, it could help others and I'd like to see some more pictures. People can also express their opinions so long as it's within the rules and not too off topic.

malicom- look up which species of birds in your area are invasive.  Chances are that if you live in an urban area, the birds eating your fruit are european starlings, rock doves, eurasian collared doves, and european sparrows.  All of these species are invasive and easily killed with an air pistol.  The doves are quite edible.

Or you could just put a net over your grape vines.
