The creature from Honey lagoon
    #18721898 - 08/18/13 07:21 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I tried some honey lcs last week and they didn't seem to be doing anything.  Looked 2 days later and found this neat jellyfish in one of my tests ...  cambodian ms

should i shake it?

Whatever that is, it's super friggin cool lookin! I started a few honey LC's maybe 3 days ago as well, and they don't really seem to be doin much either. Kinda looks like some of the sediment from the honey is what's starting to colonize, but it's super small. You can barely see it. Just gonna leave them alone for a while and see what happens.

If you're going to use that LC now, you could probably stir or shake it up. Just make sure you don't get your filter wet. If you're not going to use it right now, stick it in the fridge so it'll last quite a while

I hope you've got healthy growth there. It looks so cool!

I wouldn't shake it. I would throw it in the trash and forget lc ever existed but that's just me. There are so much better ways of doing things. Like agar for instance and using g2g transfers to increase your stock culture exponentially. With agar you can see a contam right away because you are growing on a flat plane. You can even transfer the culture away from the contam. None of this is possible with lc. Hell you don't even know if you have a contam until you test it. Once you have the culture you want on agar you can transfer it to grain and use that master jar to make 10 to 20 more jars. G2G is super fast!

I won't argue their are better ways of doing things. G2G is obvious if you're doing grains IMO. But if someone can't afford agar supplies, and they have honey kicking around the house, why not try it? Personally, I just like watching things grow. If its a blob of contam, toss it. If not, inoculate the world.

Ill move to agar once I can. But for now, I want to get LC down so I can learn to clone. And G2G just makes sense xD Idk why anyone wouldn't do G2G transfers. Just makes sense to me

Honey is still pretty damn expensive to be using for cultures! In the long run, honey is a lot more expensive than agar supplies.

Yeah I think you would be quite surprised just how cheap working with agar is. Especially if you make your own

I just have a decent amount of honey around, 95% of the time :p I wouldn't go buy things to make LC, only did it Cuz I had everything I needed already. I'm saving for agar supplies. So it won't be long before I toss the LC idea myself.

First off..that looks like every contaminated LC I've ever made, second of all, psilly is right, 3rd of all, you don't need petris and stuff to work with agar, you can use small jars, just be creative, use a steak knife as a scalpel or something, lol. All you need is the agar.:smirk:

HAHA..due when I pc'd this for the first time, a bunch of Agar came out and pooled on the big piece of foil I had put underneath the flask..
...It basically created a GIANT petri that I just left on my stove for a couple days just to watch it go...it was amazing, lol. It had trich and rizopus and all sorts of orange shit and yeast and probably poo and who know's what else...after a while I just had to get it out of my house before it started sporelating, lol. Wish I had taken pics.:badshroom::poop:

I started 3 jars of this honey LC without really planning on using them as my next step...just wanted to try it once and see what happens, inoculate a few brf jars for kicks.  And this one is the only one that did anything.  Yeah Jkz, glad you thought it looked kinda neat too!
Will definitely take the step to agar on an upcoming grow.  All the pros here are adamant about that and I'm learning about it.
Right now I've got 6 qts of colonized wbs ready to spawn to verm/coir using Franks awesome guides.  So cool to learn new things and move on from cakes!!!

Thanks for the tips everyone, but psilly, I'm not trashin' it!  It's too special for that, even if it is gonna start growing 20 different types of molds in a few days

Btw the honey I used was 100% raw organic New Zealand Wild Rata honey.  The worst type for a honey LC most likely.  Its expensive and full of sediment.  But goddamn, it is delicious.  I call it butter honey.
