Searching for a microscope!
    #18720643 - 08/17/13 09:37 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

There is a lot of information from the search results but also a lot of broken links that are from 5+ years ago.

RR and Alan both have a lot of posts regarding the topic and some information that is kinda hard for me to wrap my head around right now. There are also a lot of broken links that make it even harder for me to keep up with.

The little information that i know i'm interested in...
-Trinocular for camera adapter (and/or USB to connect to my PC screen)
-vertical and horizontal knobs for viewing my subject
-potential to use LED instead of halogen (though not really a big deal)
-up to 1600x magnification

What i want to use it for is spore/gill/mycelia examining but also potentially observing other random doo-dads like tissue from house plants and other random things i can find that might look interesting.

To my knowledge, observing spore/gill/etc would require a different microscope than if i wanted to observe something like

i'll take a guess why i think that is... lighting. in order to get an image like the above photo i need to have lighting not from below but also from other directions. is this true? could this be made up for by using some CFL desk lamps?

Also, one of the few links that still work is one in a post by Alan, here, and he says this is the one he uses. That is slightly higher than my ideal budget. i kind of want to stay under $200 if possible, but with a little convincing, i may get this one.

I dont plan on uploading pictures or anything, except for the first few that i take in an effort to share my excitement but mostly try and justify the spending of my pennies! So, it will mostly be used as a hobby for my own visual excitement every once in a while.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Correct. Looking at larger objects like that would require a stereo microscope. They are often used for dissections and watch-making and the like. It's only a low power magnification and the light comes from an external source shining down on the object.

Stereo microscopes aren't particularly useful for mycology (at least not for identification) because they lack the power to see anything on a cellular level. You want a compound microscope for that, ideally with a 100x oil immersion objective. Together with a 10x eyepiece that will give you a total magnification of 1000x (enough to see spores with some detail).

Yeah, I have an Omax, going to get a trinocular head, i would also invest in a DLSR camera and get the adapter if I were you. USB = pointless. more or less.

Joust,

so the feed from microscope to PC isnt worth it? Can you go further into that??

I have a Canon T2i. It seems that this is what you're talking about, it looks like it has EF and EF-S mount adapter? (im assuming you're a canon guy, not sure! haha)

also what microscope model do you have? I'm assuming this adapter is universal for all trinocular holes for microscopes? in other words, i can have an OMAX adapter on an AmScope, right?

As far as head mounts, you can get anything you want, but make sure its compatible, then double make sure, then send it back when you get the wrong one.. ( its not that bad lol i feel dramatic today :crazy2:)

The sensors in the USB camera are good enough to take meaningful pictures, they are also very simple to use with the program.
I have this one, it it did great until I wanted to up my game so the shroomery can better see the features and learn. If you just want to be practical and prove your micro with pics and measurements, this is great.

If you want really clear pics only a real camera can provide, then get an adapter for your camera. which costs like 100 buck or so.... then go through the hassle of properly setting up photos so you can still make accurate projections on the measurements. This place is great, http://www.microscopenet.com/ They have most everything, and show what is compatible with what. Thanks Alan for sharing the site... big help. Great site.

I got this http://www.microscopenet.com/microscope-adapter-canon-dslr-with-lens-p-223.html

hope this helps.
