Massive pinset on Oyster buckets.
    #18720363 - 08/17/13 08:32 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Almost too many, some didn't develop..
I think I may make the holes smaller in the next set.
:strokebeard:

But hey, I'm not complaining!
Harvested 18 pounds so far, and there are still a few residual clusters
finishing up on those 8 buckets, with another 5 buckets right behind them.

Holy shit I haven't seen brain clusters like that since I grew the Sporeworks columbinus strain, and I only got a couple of them to mature... which strain is that you're using?

These pearls I'm growing now don't do anything like that, that's for sure!

Just grain spawn and pasteurized wheat straw.

Each bucket is about 12-13 lbs total with
probably around 1.5 - 2 lbs of whole oat spawn.

The grain spawn gets a bit of gypsum and the pasteurization water gets hydrated lime,
but other than that there are no supplements.

Strain is Everything Mushrooms Blue Oyster.

Everything mushroom eh?  Wow!  Impressive

I gotta try my blues on straw...

Thats funny you say that!  Are EM's strains the same as sporeworks?
I remember their site directed you to Everything Mushrooms for a while to buy edible cultures..

Yeah I dunno, that's a good question - all I know is my sporeworks strain pinned in huge brain-like clusters just like that!  I had forgotten how well it did!  I think I just didn't get as many at a time because I used wood pellets instead of straw.  Here's what they looked like:

That one shot of yours where they just cover the entire bucket is awesome!

After seeing those pictures, I'd bet a buffalo nickle it's the same damn strain.

Are those 2 gallon buckets?  Mine are 5 gallon.
No big deal.

Yep, 2 gallon - and I bet you're right.  Now you got me wanting to try it out in some 5 gallon buckets!

Yep, all my buckets are 5 gallon.
I love them, with the exception of cleaning them.
Im going to invest in an electric pressure washer to make the job easier.
They hold a decent amount of straw and are easily moved around, stacked, and stored.
When I get bigger though I'm switching to columns, that's too many buckets to clean...

Ever tried just lining them with a trash bag before filling?  That's what I did with my 5 gallon buckets, and just cut x's where the holes are.  It just started fruiting so I haven't tried cleanup yet but I should just be able to pop the bag out and not have to clean the bucket at all.

WOW! Nice grow. You just changed my whole approach to what I was planning. I love that they are stackable and you don't have to worry about hanging bags stretching and slicing off fruit clusters. :takingnotes:

Sounds like a great idea.

Thanks guys!

The trash bag inside does help, I've done it in the past.
I just had them in trash bags to incubate,
so I didn't want to use 2 bags per bucket, so much plastic...
:feelsbadman:

Ya I'm pushing well over 25 pounds off of 13 buckets first flush.

I'm trying to harvest them early so they will stay nice until
this coming Saturday for the farmers market..
Fingers crossed!

Farmer's Markets are in my outlook as well, please let us (me) know how it goes. Best Of Luck!

Have you purchased any product liability for the market?  I have been shopping for it and am curious what you chose or if you are going to forgo it altogether.

I have 14x14x6 inch boxes that I'm keeping 5 lbs each in the fridge.
I believe optimum temp is 40-45 f.
Just be careful, some fridges, especially older ones, will have 'cold spots' that can freeze your product..

I have small white paper bags for the individual sales that I will fold over and staple my business card to.

Cap, I looked into insurance, but my local market, thankfully, does not require it.
I could have gotten $1 mil. in product liability insurance for around $40-$50 a month so its not that bad.
I am going to hold out on insurance until it becomes a necessity,
Insurance in general is a scam in my book..

I have looked into it a lot myself.  I know some require it and some don't.  I've honestly thought about just starting a road side stand to start out.  In the right spot it may work.  Where did you manage to get a monthly qquote?  Everything I've seen has been for a year and around 300 which isn't bad.  One covers everywehre you go no matter where at.

Ya screw insurance.

I know I'll need it sooner or later to stay legal,
but it's really not necessary if it's a small/medium sized farm and you play your cards right.

I got that quote from farmers,
but they royally screwed me on some car insurance nonsense a while back so I'm already pissed at them.
