Do you talk to yourself? And if so, how often? * 1
    #18720220 - 08/17/13 07:39 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I talk to myself....like a lot. I've never really given it much thought until quiet recently when I started to realize how much I actually do it.

I reckon I have like 3-5 long, out loud, conversations with myself each day, interspersed with smaller, shorter, just in my head conversations.

I generally like to go out on my deck in the morning and have my coffee and cigarette while having a nice long, out loud, monologue about whatever thing is currently bouncing around in my noggin.

A lot of the time I'm actually not talking to myself though, it's sort of like I'll have a conversation with a person who I know in real life, I imagine the response they might give and then respond accordingly. It's only certain people though, for example many of my conversations are with one of my old High School English teachers.

Sometimes I'll just pace around having these conversations for a bit, I find it very entertaining for some reason.

Wow typing all these out makes me sound completely insane.

Oh yeah and before you ask... I have a fairly normal social life, I do get out of the house quiet often. I'm not a hermit. That being said I think I do lean towards the more introverted side of the personality spectrum.

So yeah...enough rambling. I'd like to hear from you guys. Do you talk to yourself as well? Or should I just give up and admit myself to the looney bin right now?

I think you'd be surprised as to how many people do those same things but just don't openly talk about it. It's healthy to engage yourself

Exactly, it really helps me work things out. My neighbor actually caught me having my early morning chat once, I probably went on a good ten minutes before I noticed he was like ten feet away behind a hedge. I can only imagine what he thinks of me now considering how bizarre my topics of conversation tend to be.

Not super often. Sometimes I will, especially if I need to chill myself out or gather my thoughts and organize my plan of action. It's like mental coaching, lol. I pump myself up in the mirror too sometimes as well.

I tend to sing a lot on my own, and it's not always so great :uhoh:. Sometimes I'll just sing about what I'm doing, it's really embarrassing when I figure out that someone is actually home and I didn't realize it. I also sing and talk to my dogs a lot. Equally embarrassing when you realize someone has heard you singing an impassioned but poorly improvised ballad about doing the dishes to your dog.

This thread reminded me of this :

Lol I did used to talk to myself but once you have a few really close friends that you talk to every day and you can tell them anything there's no need to talk to myself.

I'm not to big on the pump up stuff...though I do notice when I'm tripping I tend to give myself lots of pep talks, sometimes in the mirror.

Not a big singer either. I do like to whistle, only when I'm by myself though. I baby talk my dog all the time, pretty much every time I walk into a room she is in.

 Nice video

That might be the thing. I only really have two "really good friends" one of which just got shipped off to Afghanistan, and the other I get to see maybe twice a week if that. Everyone else I just sort of consider "friends"/acquaintances. Not that I don't enjoy their company, I do, it's just I don't connect with them on the same level as my two really good friends.

I like to talk to myself internally, and when I think of something really strange I'll say it out loud for attention. Sometimes people will laugh, sometimes they'll think Im handicapped.

Right on:thumbup: Good to know I'm not alone!

I can relate to the whole pretending to be someone else/superior version of yourself. I do that once in a while as well. It's usually like a future, more successful version of myself, sort of like how I'd like to turn out 5 years down the road or what have you.

I don't think you guys should feel weird about this at all!

I inner monologue all the time, I thought it was a very very normal everyday thing ...or at least not something abnormal.

Sometimes I can just zone out and not think in terms of words, and it's a nice escape, though. I often express my thoughts and feelings through imagery and painting more than words, but I think that it is a very normal thing for introverts to 'monologue' in their head.

Some of the best writing I do happens solely within in the confines of my head - sometimes I can paint the most beautiful pictures of words and images with my brain out of the most ordinary moments. Transferring it to canvas is another thing, but I'm glad that I have a rich 'inner life' and I've got a lot going on inside my noggin.

...You guys should be too! Can you imagine being a person who relied solely on others for their own amusement or for thought provoking questions/feelings/thoughts? Or people who just seem to have next to nothing going on inside their head...I couldn't imagine living otherwise.

I don't talk to myself out loud too often, but yeah I have whole conversations with people in my head, filling in the parts of 2-3 people, sometimes even more.

Damn near never, it's a rare occurrence, unless I'm on LSD.

I actually don't even have much of an "internal voice/monologue" as it is (or an outer voice , all my life I've been asked "why are you so quiet?" or if I actually speak, there's days where I don't even speak out but a few sentences). I don't really think in words, or as I go about my day the thoughts that pass through my mind don't consist of words...rather it's a constant flux of images, concepts, patterns, feelings, and other abstractions I can't even begin to put into words.

It's hard to explain...words do go through my mind when in conversation or when I'm typing....but it seems like first the concept/color/motion/or feeling that's attached to the word I'm trying to say has to come first before, then I translate that into the word I'm trying to say. This process of translating causes a delay/pause in my speech sometimes.

I do notice, though, that LSD specifically causes me to talk to my self in certain situations. It brings about more of a "verbal" response within me to things/situations I encounter, and that goes right out my mouth .....it was an interesting observation that I noticed recently while tripping.

Huh that's pretty interesting. I honestly can't imagine what it would be like to not be constantly talking to yourself in your head.

I'm the same when it comes to tripping, I can be a big talker, I usually find myself narrating what I'm doing while I'm tripping, or like I said before, giving myself pep talks.

i talk to myself alll the time in my head, but its more in an observative way, rather than full on conversations. rarely do i find myself talking/thinking out loud to myself though.
im relatively shy in person, and quiet, but thats also probably due to me being lost in thought all the time.

About 1-4 times a day, usually a sentence or here that I think outloud. So pretty often, sometimes if whats on my mind is about another person I'll have a mock conversation with them outloud and try to workout what Im gonna say, or what I would say. Never around other people though, thats cray.

If I lived by myself I wouldn't have to talk to myself...
