I accidentally wrote out my awesome story in the pub, and it wasn't received too decently. Ah well. I went off to Reddit to ask for some wisdom, and I opened my unreads today, and saw this. I'd like to share it here if I can:
(Christianity)
Quote:
Pascals Wager is a fine argument for a believer, and seemingly foolish to a non believer. I know this because i was once a non-believer myself, and thought the very same thought. Allow me to explain why Pascal's Wager is in fact a good argument for a believer. Imagine a believer playing a game of poker(representing life in this case). They are playing with chips(representing time). They take a look at their hand(their circumstance in life) and decide to go all in. Some go all in because they see the signs(they have a good hand). Some go all in because they have a feeling. and some go all in because they have nothing else to lose. To the non believer sitting across from the believer regards this move as foolishness. But in the mind of the believer they take this risk knowing that it could not work out. and hence the essence of the argument. If I'm right I have everything to gain(double the life, eternal life in this case) and if they are wrong they lose nothing. As they have just lost their time. But the funny thing is..normally in poker when you lose your chips you lose the game. But in the context a believer believing in God they really have indeed lost nothing at all. They may lose all of their time(chips) but they enjoyed the ride(life) and that is all that counts.

Well, for a non believer, the argument is foolish because it's basically saying it's safer to fake it. A skeptic can't just believe something by will alone IMO, he basically needs proof or some powerful brainwashing experience to believe it explicitly (maybe a lot of psychedelics).
As for a believers, IMO, if a gambling paradigm makes you feel better
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

DarkElf, I would ask yourself why you have certain beliefs and what they do for your life experience. Life is fleeting and I would like to discover ideas through experience rather than through preconceived ideas. Most people are full of shit and stupid.

By the same token then:
If there is a god and he is just, he would allow just and good people into heaven regardless of subjective beliefs and traditions.
This is one reason Pascal's Wager isn't sound.
Another reason is that it fails to take into account such atrocities as the dark ages, and the hindrance that such beliefs bring to technology, science, and even personal freedoms when "god" is used synonymous with religion.
The wager dodges the real issue which isn't about god, but about religion and their influence. I personally can't find a good reason to put beliefs before sound logic and reasoning.
